This Kenya vs South Africa “beef” will really make you realise that some of the damage colonialism did to the African mind might take generations to undo 😭
Take this lady for example. She posts a picture of a community that has managed to preserve its culture, language, identity, land, livestock and way of life and calls them “poverty ambassadors of Africa” because, in her mind, this is what poverty looks like.
And that right there is the problem.
We have been taught to look at an African who still looks African and immediately associate them with poverty. The closer you are to your traditional way of life, the more “backward” you must be. The more Western you look, dress, speak and live, the more successful you must be.
And the irony is, she genuinely thinks calling them “poverty ambassadors” is a flex while sitting there in a wig trying to look as far removed from her natural African appearance as possible 😭 Again, absolutely nothing wrong with wearing wigs,but sis, you cannot use someone else’s Africanness as evidence of their poverty while presenting your distance from your own as evidence of progress.
And this is why sometimes the insults Africans throw at each other tell you more than the actual argument. You can participate in the Kenya vs South Africa banter, it’s actually hilarious sometimes 😂😂 but every once in a while, pay attention to what people say when they are trying to insult each other. You will quickly realise just how much of Africa still measures itself using somebody else’s ruler.
@Creshandah what a shame 🚶🏿♀️
