Congratulations to Zaza Gelashvili, a graduate student in the lab of cell biologist Dr. Philipp Niethammer at the @GSKGradSchool, who recently received the 2026 Chairman’s Prize, an annual award established by Louis V. Gerstner Jr., GSK Board of Trustees Chair Emeritus and namesake of the school, to recognize an outstanding GSK student who is the first author of research published in a scientific journal. Zaza's work has uncovered new ways that cells sense physical change and turn that information into coordinated responses. “This award encourages me to continue pursuing fundamental questions in basic research, where some of the most revealing results emerge when biological systems do not behave as predicted," says Zaza. Leading experts in #cancerresearch, including Dr. @AndreaCercek, a gastrointestinal medical oncologist at MSK, reflected on the significant strides made in tackling the disease, along with the work that remains to be done toward finding a cure, at the TIME100 (@TIME) Health Leadership Forum in New York. Dr. Cercek, who was also a 2025 TIME100 Health honoree, highlighted the growing potential of #vaccines and immunotherapy to harness the immune system to fight cancer. “The hope … between vaccines and immunotherapy as well is that they harness the immune system, which is really the most powerful drug we have,” she said. “It can fight anything as long as it’s equipped to do so and it recognizes something is foreign, and so it’s really that combination that needs to happen for therapy to work.” Read more: bit.ly/4xi6Fs4

🚨 The @FDA has granted “Breakthrough Therapy” designation to FMISO, a specialized imaging tracer that can help identify patients with #HPV-positive #throatcancer who may safely receive less-intensive radiation treatment. “This has been an absolute game changer for treating certain people with throat cancers caused by the human papillomavirus or HPV,” says MSK radiation oncologist @imrtlee, who pioneered the approach.
