> are people really using your product? Amen, having a deep understanding for what and how people are using your product is product management. Metrics are supporting evidence and not suppose to be your guiding light.

Yup - optimizing metrics only may miss the forest for the trees. But they sure help your thinking

What artifacts do product marketers create?

The story the world sees about the products and often the feedback / understanding / dreams of users too

More simple steps instead of fewer complicated ones is a brilliant insight. Gonna be applying to my own products.

Thanks for the great article. I’ve been transitioning from marketing focus to product focus and the emphasis on storytelling resonated.

The prototype is becoming a way to develop judgment. You get to feel the product before the organization has had time to form a bad abstraction around it. This is excellent, Josh.

This is awesome! Thank you for sharing this insight Funny that it all started at a Rob Glaser company who (as you know) worked at msft where program management and in many ways the "spec" started One thing from my time there if you couldn't sell your story to developers don't bother showing them the "spec"

would it be fair to say that "story" is really a tool for Alignment? a great prd in the past also included a story.

PMs still think about metrics over "Are people really using my product" is because their KPIs still revolve around metrics. I think only the good ones are consistently trying to win that user love through good storytelling from Day 0, not really worrying about the metrics.

This is the trap I keep catching myself in. Building is getting cheap enough that I can create a surprisingly competent answer before proving anyone has the question. I’m trying to validate pain, budget and route to buyer before I build the factory.

MVP is the core action. Before you tell the story, you’re the first audience — figuring out why it deserves to be shown to the next one. Thanks for sharing Josh😀

Great article, I especially liked this part: > with a longer flow, won’t more people drop off? Yes! But the ones who get through are far, far more likely to actually use your product. Curious if in larger companies different PMs may target different metrics?

Lots to chew on here - thanks for the sharing your thoughts. I'm curious in the Twitter case - how did you nudge people into actually posting after they understood what the product purpose was? There seems to be this inception moment in consumer (social) products around tipping the risk-reward into sharing their inner world or bouncing for 'maybe later'...
