Britain offered a fire sale of visas to migrant care workers.
No immigration health surcharge, reduced visa fees, ability to bring uncapped dependants.
They did not come out of altruism, they came because diabolical immigration decisions enabled them to.

Angela Rayner has said that Shabana Mahmood’s plan to make it harder for foreign workers to claim permanent residence in the UK is unfair because it will “change the goalposts”
In an interview with The Times before Labour’s party conference, the housing, communities and local government secretary said that the plan would hit foreign care workers who had “moved their lives here to look after our loved ones”
Rayner said she stood by the criticism she made of the plan before she rejoined the government under Andy Burnham, when she described it as “un-British”. Burnham also has concerns and is considering exempting foreign care workers who are already in Britain from the crackdown
Asked if she stood by her views, she said: “Especially in regards to the carers, who were asked to come to this country to care for some of our most vulnerable and then we changed the goalposts years down the line, I think that’s very disruptive
“I do have concerns about that … when you ask someone to come here and look after your most vulnerable and they spend years dedicating themselves, moving their lives here to look after our loved ones.”
Asked whether she had raised the issue with Mahmood directly, Rayner said: “I think Shabana knows. It was in the newspaper at the time. I’ve not changed my view on that. I just think when people relocate because we have skills shortages in this country, I think we have to be aware of that.”

The ILR reforms are the most consequential action Burnham can take this Parliament. Both for the fiscal sustainability of the Government & cohesiveness of society. Naturally Labour MPs are agitating to push Burnham into gutting the reforms & deliver the worst possible outcome.
Labour rocked by a row over cracking down on Boris wave migrants.
Angela Rayner and now Rachael Maskell call for care workers to be exempt from changes to ILR rules.
Maskell “It’s the wrong set of values - it’s not the values we have got.”

Thought this interesting after Sheeran row. Left leaning voters more permissive of political statements on stage than average public, but tend to say a pro Israel or anti migration one unacceptable. Right lean voters tend to oppose all the political statements we tested on stage

Reminder, the British economy was marmalised by the financial crisis, worst of the major economies. We then got policy badly wrong after the shock, hampering recovery and inhibiting economic activity. Next time someone moans about finance and says we should do less of it, show them these numbers below.
Finance has for a long time been the driving force for the UK economy. Latest GDP industry data show GDP in finance and insurance down 12% on its level two years ago and 24% down on 2007. I knew the City was having problems but hadn't focused on the scale of the decline!

Economic growth is fundamentally incompatible with our 2050 Net Zero commitment. It’s essentially impossible for any third runway proposal to overcome the ~£60bn ding it gets on environmental grounds. The CCC are basically demanding fare prices be nearly doubled as a mitigation.

Hormuz is no longer behaving like a chokepoint under effective Iranian control.
Hormuz oil flows are now above 13.5 mb/d on a 7-day average.
The biggest increase is Saudi Arabia’s Gulf loading surge.
That changes the strategic picture.
Iran can still attack ships, raise insurance costs and make the Strait dangerous.
But danger is not the same as control.
The more oil that clears Hormuz, the more Iran’s leverage shifts from blocking flows to merely imposing costs.
Latest Hormuz oil flow run shows more than 13.5 MMbpd clearing the Strait as of yesterday on a 7dma (and as regular readers will know, day-ago numbers are usually an undercount)
By far the biggest rise has come from Saudi Arabia's new Gulf loadings blitz.

Anyone who cares about the right to protest in our democracy should be deeply concerned by this. Climate protesters,the Palestine movement, animal rights, anti-war, left, right, whether or not we agree with the reason for his protest, we ought all to be united in horror that a guy just got two years in prison for hurling an empty plastic bottle and some sweary words at a policeman. And they processed his punishment in under a week. This is police state territory. Very very frightening.

The University of East Anglia now concedes urban warming is substantial.
Cities warm faster than the countryside.
Concrete, asphalt, lost vegetation all trap heat.
Researchers modelled 104 tropical and subtropical cities. In 81% of cases, cities warmed faster than surrounding rural areas. On average, cities added about half a degree C on top of the regional trend.
The authors admit climate models underestimate this amplification. This is the University of East Anglia's climate unit saying this, who were key players in the 2009 ClimateGate emails.
If urban areas systematically add nearly half a degree, then separating land use change from background climate change is not minor. It is central to the global warming narrative.

It’s true that there are massive challenges for housebuilding - in many ways the problem has shifted from scarcity of land to the fact you can’t build at a profit. But let’s slash back the policy costs first before juicing the demand side on the same ridiculous cost base.
