Breaking: September was Earth's *most unusually moist month* on record! 💧 During September, moisture levels in Earth’s atmosphere were the highest on record for that month, considering data from @CopernicusECMWF that extends back to 1940. This record is notable because of how far it deviated from the average. Moisture levels were 6.5 percent higher than the 1991-2020 September average, making it the most anomalous month on record. This is the second consecutive month that such a record has been broken — and probably marks the start of a string of moisture records for the planet, as the strongest El Niño on record and the planet’s rising temperatures increase the water vapor-carrying capacity of the air. Last month, moisture records weren’t confined to a particular part of the globe — they touched areas from the equator to the poles and included about 10 percent of the planet. Relatedly, about 17 percent of the planet experienced monthly rainfall that was in the top 10 percent of historical values — also a record for September. Although the level of moisture in the sky doesn’t have a one-to-one relationship with rainfall amounts, having more moisture can boost the odds for rainfall extremes, if there’s a force to squeeze that moisture out, such as a front or low pressure system. There is a strong chance that 2027 breaks the record set in 2024 — with more extreme rainfall to follow.

This is the end game Earth's energy imbalance The difference between amount of energy Earth receives from the sun and amount it radiates outward into space has more than doubled over past 2 decades, massively exceeding increase predicted by climate models. livescience.com/planet-earth…

France’s ongoing drought has once again pushed soil moisture further below historical levels than any previously recorded drought. Uncharted territory.

🚨 This is pretty wild... the average global sea surface temperature (outside of the polar regions) is still above 70°F (21.1°C) through the end of September. This is significantly above the prior record. We'll cover this in our October climate briefing: climatecentral-org.zoom.us/w…

Capitalism has put us all in immense danger.
Exactly. If you have an Earth Energy Imbalance like the one we have, it's impossible for El Niño not to destabilize. It's the most powerful oscillation for a reason. And we know the ending of the story, which we can still avoid, but... for how long? science.org/doi/10.1126/scie…
