After advising 50+ consumer companies over the last year, the one thing that separates those who can execute and those who can't: Having a full-time designer in the room at all times I've met with countless companies that have raised millions—and even one that has raised billions—that do not even have a designer on payroll. This makes product development broken: 1/ You simply cannot have constructive conversations about ideas without visualizing them in real-time 2/ Your experiments will frequently have inconclusive results because users cannot discover features or they misunderstand how they work 3/ There is no one who can galvanize the team with a vision of what the product could look and feel like And to be abundantly clear: I'm not referring to visual UI or graphics. I'm talking about someone who can think through the fundamental building blocks of product comprehension—like navigation, interaction and copywriting—and is technically savvy enough to visualize those components in high resolution. There can certainly be exceptions to not having a designer, like where the CEO is an exceptional visual thinker, but that does not scale beyond a small team. At the end of day, products live and die in the pixels: it's what the users see and tap. And without someone shepherding that process, you are effectively wandering the desert blind.

in my previous job at @ideo, we used to live by the saying “'never go to a meeting without a prototype”. a designer’s superpower is to visualize ideas and make them feel like they are already real

This is spot on, but after working with multiple organizations on future technology, product strategy, and execution, I’d argue it’s not just a designer that’s needed, but a highly competent engineer who deeply understands both the technical and user experience sides of product development. The biggest gap I see in most companies (even those with millions or billions in funding) is that they design in a vacuum, with lofty ideas and beautiful wireframes that fall apart when it’s time to build. Without engineering expertise in the room, teams end up with unrealistic concepts, inefficient execution, and features that simply don’t work in practice. The truth is, having a technical lead who can bridge the gap between design, engineering, and actual system architecture is extremely rare, so rare, in fact, that even most billionaires don’t have that person. I’ve been fortunate to work with someone who truly gets this, and I’ve seen firsthand how game-changing it is. If more companies had access to that level of technical leadership, we’d see far fewer broken products, wasted millions, and teams spinning their wheels. 🔥

Idea -> UX -> UI pipeline is the biggest bottleneck. Engineering + distribution are solved

In software, the entirety of what you do terminates in pixels on the screen. You must think through the lens of those pixels.

Fair point, but isn’t this more about leadership prioritizing design thinking rather than just having a full-time designer? Plenty of teams have designers and still ship clunky products because decision-makers don’t listen to them.

Great Design leaders often struggle to get a “seat at the table” whereas great business leaders fundamentally appreciate that Design is the nexus of modern value creation — the most relevant and impactful table in the house.

Definitely agree with this. I don’t see a lot of founders clutching the design role, which to me feels like a superpower as the ceo but do question whether that’s a job to pass of early as it does create bottlenecks at times. I got to talk to @dtrinh about this at @jmj’s PMF event and it felt nice to hear his encouragement with that decision. (Thank you Danny.) IMO more founders should learn design. At least start with the basics of Google’s Material Design. I don’t know how I’d be doing this otherwise.

Yes, without a full-time designer, your product development will likely be blindfolded, no matter how much funding you raise.

if you are a designer reading the above post and you want to find a leadership team that takes prototyping rigour very seriously and have an interest in making the trading and investment interfaces of DeFi 1000x better than TradeFi Compensation range: $100k - $120k + hefty equity package (will reflect how serious we are) DM 🫡
