I remember reading an interview with an onion employee who was asked if they ever self censor for being too edgy. They said the onion's never afraid of being too edgy, they just don't want to come across as being heartless

Wasn’t there some YouTube video where they interviewed The Onion editors where they had no idea how to approach their first issue since 9/11?

I remember reading this at the time, it made me cry then and it still does now. Beautifully done @TheOnion

FYI for anyone who doesn’t know
The Onion actually did a whole (surprisingly tasteful) 9/11 issue—it was still a real fake newspaper back then:

This one always stuck with me as well. I read it yesterday and got teary-eyed all over again.

I think about this post all the time. It’s just how everything feels now.

I just read this for the first time and now I'm lightly crying in an Applebee's.

How satire and truth repeats it self again and again. Only a few yeas ago “Not knowing what else to do, woman buys shopping carts full of toilet paper”.

my husband and I were talking the other day about how this headline really did represent a mindset people had that younger people now couldn't begin to fathom. truly their best headline ever imo. I think about it so often

I vaguely remember some BS about how after that day “satire was dead” (mostly because my friend had wished puns or some other type of joke had died). Clearly we needed it more than ever.

The Onion is wonderful. Never afraid. This was pitch perfect.

This is just beautiful short fiction, actually.

It’s the absurdity that makes it hit so hard. Beneath the joke, it captures that helpless feeling of wanting to do something—anything—when you have no idea what else to do.

All the typical satire in that issue was brilliantly spot-on, but including this simple, sad gem was perfect.

It’s strangely heartbreaking and tender at the same time. The absurdity almost makes the human emotion hit even harder.
