The State Pension is the sole income for many pensioners. The system rules them out of additional help (eg pension credit). All those demanding the Triple Lock is ended...how would they like to live on £241 per week? The UK already has the lowest pension in the G7. Shameful.

People just on the state pension and nothing else are entitled to Pension Credit. They need to apply for it. About 15% of pensioners are below official poverty level, so are about 15% of working-age people. Yet the working-age poor don’t get “triple-locked”.

No, the qualifying income for Pension Credit is deliberately set a few pounds below the level of the New State Pension, which is the pension received by anyone who retired after 2016. Therefore they do not qualify.

We also give 24% of pensioners who identify as millionaires state benefits. We need to means test it

A universal benefit is cheaper to administer and beneficial in many ways. Those who don't need it can be taxed more.

Or £184/week for older pensioners.

The state pension would still increase, just not by the volatile, unsustainable triple lock mechanism.

How would they live on £241 per week!?! Isn’t that the whole idea…you have many decades to work, save, invest & buy/pay off a home, so you don’t end up just living on £241/week! Or just let everyone else do that, I guess…and pay for you too!

Getting rid of the triple lock doesn't get rid of the pension ffs. You people just don't understand anything.

Its not. Anyone living on state pension alone, have it topped up with various benefits.

Absolutely correct. Percentage increases make the pensioners poorer and poorer every year because the percentage of a pension is tiny compared to the real increases in cost of living. The politicians supporting this move should try Living on a pension themselves. !!

Pensioners should of saved for their retirement and cut back on the luxuries. They've had years and years of having everything handed to them and they've pissed up the wall. There's no excuse for their laziness and taking handouts.

We should be able to target better support for those for whom the state pension is their sole income without retaining a triple lock on a benefit that also “supports” millionaires.

If the state pension is your sole income and you have savings of less than £16K you can get Council Tax Support, and also Housing Benefit if you pay rent. Potentially thousands of £ per year of extra support.

The majority of pensioners have other income than just state pension.

Some are zero mortgage homeowners. Some are renting and claim housing benefit. (LHA capped but should cover most of the cost). No commuting, no out of house expenses, other than by choice. £241 pw is enough for me as a state only live alone pensioner. I am not cold nor hungry.

Yes, why is it always the vulnerable? I doubt he will target it in this Parliament but I suspect it is coming.

I recently lost my job due to my employers going bankrupt. I am on UC while I find something new. UC is £1600pcm total for me, my wife and my child. After rent is paid, we have £187 a week to live on. 2/3 pensioners own their home outright and a couple would get £480

Don't they get that the more £ they get, the more tax they pay, so do all the businesses they can now afford to patronise, multiplying over years boosting the whole economy? (For those who still think govt spends taxes)

But it isn’t for many more and this increases as years pass and the expectation to have personal pensions increased. It just isn’t sustainable or morally correct to be giving wealthy pensioners such increases when the younger people who are paying for it can’t afford to live.

The system does not rule them out of additional benefits at all. It no wonder the poorest pensioners don't claim what they are entitled to, when people like you give out wrong information

There sole income? Why the hell did they opt out of the private pension? You cant just piss away all your money then go crying to the state Is this the new meta? Dont plan for retirement then use your self imposed destitution as leverage to barter with the gov for free stuff?

We must get past the idea that every pensioner sits knitting their own winter fuel. Many pensioners are some of the wealthiest people in the country. Those living on lower income, yes. Millionaires, no. Invest it in social care and young people
