Here's my @Spectator column, 'Is Wayne Rooney the greatest Jewish athlete of all time?' spectator.com/article/is-way… There’s a well-worn joke that the shortest book ever published is ‘Great Jewish Sporting Heroes’. We Jews are known for various attributes – a penchant for Nobel prizes, for example – but sporting prowess isn’t really one of them. And if that’s true generally, the book of British Jewish sports stars is even thinner. There’s racing driver Stirling Moss and Harold Abrahams, of Chariots of Fire fame. Or football manager David Pleat. Then it starts to get a bit more difficult. But all those jokes need to be torn up now that Wayne Rooney has revealed that he’s Jewish. Properly Jewish, not just ‘I love bagels’ Jewish. In an episode of his new reality show, The Real Rooneys, the former England and Manchester United strike relates how he recently discovered that his maternal grandmother and her family were Polish Jews: ‘I’ve recently found out that my mum’s mum, so my nan’s, family were Polish Jews.’ When a producer points out that this means Rooney is halachically (according to Jewish religious law) Jewish, Rooney replies: ‘I’m Catholic. But then I’ve always asked questions like, why aren’t we Jewish?’. He then jokes there could be a spin-off show, ‘Roo the Jew?’. The revelation comes during a visit to Auschwitz with his family, Rooney’s second time at the concentration camp. As it happens, I was with Rooney for his first visit, in 2012 when the England team were in Poland for the Euros. As editor of the Jewish Chronicle I was asked to accompany the players. I am not suggesting I had the least idea that Rooney was actually Jewish, but I wrote at the time how struck I was by his reaction and behaviour. He was clearly affected and genuinely moved – he was tearful – and asked a series of informed and curious questions of the guides. This is probably the first time that the names Wayne Rooney and Tom Stoppard have ever appeared in the same sentence, but they have something important in common. Like Rooney, Stoppard also discovered that he was Jewish – learning at 56 that four of his grandparents and several other relatives had been murdered in the Holocaust. He had been brought up in England as an Anglican. Likewise Madeleine Albright, the former US Secretary of State, who discovered at 59 that her parents were Jewish converts to Catholicism before the Holocaust. She also learned that numerous relatives had been murdered in the Holocaust. Rooney is not the only England footballer of his generation to have Jewish roots and, truth be told, his teammates’ are much stronger. David Beckham’s grandfather on his mother’s side, Joseph, was Jewish and Beckham has spoken warmly of how his grandfather ensured that the family kept some Jewish traditions: ‘We went to bar mitzvahs and weddings and I would wear a kippah. Every Saturday morning, I used to go to see my grandfather – you’d walk in the house to my grandmother preparing chicken soup and matza balls and latkes. 'We always kept to those traditions; it was always about the family coming together and spending time together.’ He has also said, ‘I am part of the Jewish community and I am proud to say it.’ Indeed, Beckham knows Hebrew prayers. In an interview at St John’s Wood synagogue in 2023, he was asked about his claims to uphold some Jewish traditions. The interviewer started off the brachah (prayer) prayer for bread – which every Jew would know – and Beckham finished it in Hebrew. But even if Beckham got there first, it’s good to welcome Rooney to the fold. As for Colleen: given her skilled detective and espionage work in outing Rebecca Vardy, surely she would be a shoo-in for the Mossad?

Where do they find these people? We don't arm Israel. They sell arms and tech to us.

How dare Miliband shake Araqchi’s hand. He owes Parliament, British Jews, and the Foreman family an explanation and an apology. A propaganda win for Tehran, that’s what Miliband has given Iran. This is not an ally who’s misbehaving so you make a stern face while shaking their hand. This is the regime behind repeated attacks on our Jewish communities since 2025, attempted assassinations on our soil, cyber attacks on our nation, that murders women for a raising their voices and their heads, and is holding an innocent - I will say those words even if Miliband won’t - British couple on a 10-year sentence so it can use them as leverage. Putting the two words together is incongruous, if not grotesque. Auschwitz-Birkenau was the largest of all the Nazi concentration camps, where around a million Jews were murdered along with a further 100,000 ‘undesirables’. There is no place on earth that still resonates more of evil, even to this day, 81 years after its liberation. Yet a forthcoming Disney+ reality series includes its stars being taken around Auschwitz. It seems unimaginably crass. Outrageous, even. And when you learn that the series is The Real Rooneys, starring Wayne and Coleen Rooney, it would be understandable if your reaction was to think that Disney+ had lost all sense of decency. ...So it’s natural to think that our celebrity culture could hardly sink any lower than to pair Wayne Rooney with Auschwitz. For, as part of his reality TV series, the former Manchester United star visits the death camp as he unravels his Polish-Jewish roots. But natural and understandable as that reaction might be, I have a different view. I think it is not only something to be applauded; it is inspired. I say this for one simple reason: I have visited Auschwitz with Wayne Rooney. And I can report first-hand that he was a model of decorum, intelligent curiosity and thoughtfulness. In 2012, the England team were in Poland for the European Championships that summer. To their credit, the Football Association decided it would be good for the players to learn about what was done at Auschwitz and, even more importantly, because as role models, their mere presence there would do much to boost Holocaust education among youngsters. ...First, we were taken to the prison cells. As we entered Block 11 – known as the ‘Death Block’, where prisoners were tortured and left to starve – I saw Rooney dab his eyes. We were then taken to the courtyard between Blocks 10 and 11 where prisoners were executed by firing squad against the so-called ‘Death Wall’. Rooney and his teammates gave their rapt attention to the guide. There was no banter. No sniggering at the back. Just stunned silence. Rooney stared at a picture of SS doctor Heinz Thilo greeting the new arrivals at Birkenau and pointing them into two areas: one for work, another for the gas chambers. When we then made our way to the site where the photo had been taken, Rooney started to pace out the movements for himself, needing to comprehend the dimensions of a death sentence. ...At one point there is a display of 40,000 shoes, removed from the corpses of those murdered. Rooney and I had the same reaction; neither of us could bear to look. Some 240,000 of the victims murdered at Auschwitz were under 15 and their tiny shoes stood out. We looked at each other. ...When we entered one of the larger gas chambers, Rooney asked how many people would be gassed at one time. ‘Around 2,000,’ came the answer. Rooney looked at the space as if trying to work out how 2,000 could even fit into it, let alone then be murdered in it. ...As the visit drew to a close, he explained why he had come: ‘I wanted to see it for myself. What happened here puts football into perspective. It’s good for us to try to understand this history.’ There is always a danger with celebrities that when they publicise a cause, it is dragged down to their level. But not in this case. Rooney and the England team’s presence at Auschwitz that day served to spotlight a dark era of humanity’s past, the memory of which is threatened by the slow passing of survivors, and Holocaust deniers. The visit also served to remind jaded journalists like me that for all their fame and fortune, footballers can be as moved by horror as anyone. ...Cynics may doubt his authenticity, but I have seen it up close when there wasn’t a TV crew in tow. He is an unlikely ambassador for the memory of Auschwitz, but perhaps all the more powerful for that.
