To explain. Let's say you have an American lady- Jen Smith. She does STEM-Ed online and sells some IAQ products from a small online store. Those products are sold at below market value. The STEM-Ed initiative and its low margins are supported by a social media presence rather than paid advertising. Now ask yourself, for this American "Jen" right now, if she wants to do conscientious, ethical STEM-Ed for the public about the most pressing issues- is it possible for her to be apolitical? Compared to 10 years ago? Can she discuss masks, IAQ, and mitigation- even in the most abstract terms, without coming under attack from people who feel those issues are a political statement? No. During the past five years, advocating for public health- in even the most general terms, is for many people, a direct criticism of the governments that make those policies. The danger of criticizing your government, and the subjects on which it will accept criticism, can change at any time for anyone, anywhere. Now Jen Smith has a partner, Lupe Santiago. Lupe is of a class of people, that right now, can be disappeared without trial, for an indefinite period of time, without a warrant or legal recourse. This is a new thing happening for some of you now- but it's always been the case in other parts of the world. So Jen does her work, she tries to do STEM-Ed, she tries to help people access low-cost tools to protect their health. She doesn't make much, but her and Lupe get by and are able to make a difference. Eventually, Jen, with her very large social media platform, comes to the attention of people in her country who really don't want their policies to be criticized, really don't like LGBT folks all that much, and really don't like people like Lupe. So some men DHS/ICE pay Jen a visit in the middle of the night, put Jen in a car, knock her around a bit, force her to sign a confession, and make it clear that Lupe could end up disapearing for a while if Jen kept it up on social media, and maybe Jen should just close her accounts, open business ones, and stick to running her business and not use her name or her old following. Business is fine they say, they don't care about that- just don't be using "Jen Smith" on social media because we really don't want people seeing folks like you and Lupe, it's not who we are, and you have too many followers, and could say the wrong things. So Jen does what they say- because Lupe will pay if she does not. Jen's customers know she's behind the business, and that reputation allows her to eke out enough of a living to continue meet minimum orders, donate products, and keep things affordable. However, Jen's made it clear to her customers that she can no longer explicitly be herself on social media- and why. Most people respect this. Up until some people used Jen's name and put Lupe at risk- and so were blocked. Those people decided that blocking them on what was a holiday in their country- and only their country, that almost no one else in the world is aware of, was proof that Jen was against their group. So they decided to punish Jen and Lupe by posting Jen's name, along with her company name, all over social media- letting everyone knowing that she was posting again, that she had broken her agreement to keep a low profile, tagging government accounts so they would think she was starting up again, and that she has broken her promise to the athorities to not use her name or her following. Jen begged them not to do this, told them of the agreement, showed posts from before where she had asked people not to do this, posted links to news articles showing exactly what happened in these situations, and they laughed and laughed and laughed and said they could use whatever name they wanted, that other people had to respect their chosen form of address- but they didn't have to pay any attetion to anyone elses, because they were the most opressed people in the world, so therefor, could never act as opressors, or make mistakes. All the people Jen had helped for years, smuggly upvoted those posts, followed and supported those people putting her and Lupe in danger. They told people to boycott Jen's business. Wanting to show how they thought it was terrible to block people on that holiday, and foreigners not knowing about their holidays was not something that should be tolerated. DHS/ICE had been clear what would happen to Lupe if Jen had a high profile on social media again, and Jen's name was now all over. There was a pretty good chance they would visit again, so she had to tell Lupe not to come over to her home anymore, and Jen didn't want to be knocked around again, so she left the country for a while, until things cooled down, and people stopped posting her name. But Lupe had documentation issues - she could not leave the country, just go back to her state to be with her parents for a while, and Lupe was quite reasonably fed up with paying the price for people hating Jen. Lupe wanted to know "why do you keep helping these people when they want to destroy us? If I stay with you, eventually, I will pay the price for them hating you." Jen had to admit Lupe was right. It had happened several times, and Lupe would pay the price first for foreigners hating Jen, Lupe is the one that would go do "Aligator Alcetraz" when American progressives gleefully wanted to put Jen "in her place". Because they can do no wrong- they are sure they are the most moral people in the world. So Lupe quite reasonably left Jen, after many years together, leaving her brokenhearted and alone since. Time passed, and Jen kept her head down. She just did her business as she had been told. Did not post about sensitive things. Did not embarrass her country by posting LGBT pictures with people whom the government finds inconvenient. Just a "normal" businesswoman, someone acceptable to the people in power. Thirty years old now, someone who had learned their lesson to be less potentially sensitive and embarrassing to those in power. Business people post online all the times- if they they do not have abnormal "Western-influenced" lifestyles, it's not really a problem if they focus on business and selling products. So Jen is less vulnerable now, and since Lupe is gone, they cannot threaten her. If Jen sticks to business, and does not show an abnormal lifestyle or discuss sensitive things, indications are that she can have similar visibility to any other "normal" business person in her country talking about their products. Doing this means you can sell more, and so help more people if your focus is low-cost public health tools. But Jen is understandably being cautious, because things change, what you could say a few years ago will get ICE/DHS at your door now, and next year, who knows? Things change, what was safe once becomes dangerous, and what was once dangerous may become safe again. If your ability to help the most people- get life-saving tools in hands, depends on talking to more people, on better visibility, it can be a very precarious road to walk. The more visible "Jen" is, the more influence she has, and the more people she can help, and now, she has very little left to lose. So she might as well have something to show for everything that's been done to her.
