Writing is not logically necessary for sophisticated thought. But it is also structurally well suited to cultivating several components of thought. Those claims are perfectly compatible.
And the idea that writing cultivates thinking is hardly “traceable to the 1970s writing-across-the-curriculum movement.” Francis Bacon wrote in 1597:
“Reading maketh a full man; conference a ready man; and writing an exact man.”
The stronger conclusion is more interesting than either extreme:
Writing is neither merely a memory aid nor demonstrably the supreme faculty of thought. It is a powerful cognitive technology because it packages several useful operations at once: externalization, explicit representation, recursive inspection, and revision.
The pedagogical question, then, is not whether writing is sacred or dispensable. It is which cognitive operations writing induces, which of them can be reproduced by other activities, and which medium induces them most reliably and efficiently.
The head of the philosophy department at Williams College downplays the pedagogical value of writing:
“What if we are mistaken in treating writing as the highest cultivation of thought? The evidence that supports this belief is thin at best. Writing can be useful cognitive scaffolding for memory and self-regulated learning, but the notion that it is the best process for developing thinking skills is a fairly recent idea, traceable to the 1970s writing-across-the-curriculum movement.”
