“The goal is for Europeans to be partners, not dependencies — not just, I stress, for our sake but for yours as well, so that NATO can always reliably defend Europe effectively, even in the most stressing scenarios.” @USWPColby

In January, Secretary Hegseth promulgated the 2026 National Defense Strategy. As he put it then, “This Strategy reflects President Trump’s historic approach to our nation’s defense. It must be carried out thoroughly, rapidly, and comprehensively.” Last week, we were pleased to provide an update on how much progress the Department has made in implementing this Strategy. 1/

“Far more work remains to be done, however—and congressional support will be vital to our nation’s success. Above all, the President’s full $1.5T FY27 budget request is the essential vehicle for sustaining the momentum that we have built since the NDS’s release.” 4/4

Twenty-five years ago today thousands of innocent Americans young and old were subjected to the most horrendous, senseless violence. Like so many Americans, I remember that terrible day vividly. 1/

At the Pentagon today, we commemorated that grievous loss. But we also took further inspiration to never allow such a terrorist attack against Americans to happen again. That is a core part of our mission. Every day we remember and act on it. 2/2

Today marks the 75th anniversary of the signing of the ANZUS Treaty. The United States has no more steadfast ally than Australia, which has been with us through thick and thin for generations. Today our alliance is stronger than ever, based on shared clear-eyed realism about the challenges we face and the need to row hard to prepare together. 1/

Australia and the United States have taken great strides over the last year and a half to strengthen collective defense and deterrence by denial in the Western Pacific, but we both know we must move faster and do more to meet the moment. That is the legacy of ANZUS that we will continue to carry forward for peace through strength. 2/2

“Accordingly, we must not waste this opportunity. Now is the time, when the concrete is still wet, to set the trajectory for the coming decade and beyond, to make the best use of that extraordinary shift brought about by President Trump and key European leaders.” 13/

“Our approach, and this review, are designed to accelerate and build on this. To be clear, this does not mean a return to an idle reassurance of the past. Rather, it means looking with clear eyes and strategic realism at the geopolitical and military situation that we face here in the North Atlantic and European areas, but also for us Americans around the globe, especially in our own hemisphere and along the First Island Chain.” 14/14
