Prince’s “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” is the greatest guitar solo of all time. Not “one of” — it is THE greatest. Some called it “Disrespectful showboating” because of the talent onstage, but this was the Rock Hall of Fame. And on a stage full of legends, Prince made everyone else look like amateurs. At 3:30, Prince steps up and ends the discussion.

It was a great performance. No one I know said he upstqged anyone. The others are mainly songwriters and such, not elite guitarists. It was planned for Prince to do what he did. And it worked out well. Please don't mischaracterize it as some type of competition. Besides that, Terry Kath was equally as good if not better in 25 or 6 to 4 at Tanglewood

I didn’t say the musicians said it… I was talking about viewers. Tom Petty is actually the one who told him to go absolutely nuts with it and George Harrison’s kid was smiling the entire time.

Rolling Stone left him off of their 2003 Top 100 Guitarists. This was Prince's response.

I had no idea. I’ve never heard that before. The dude had Hendrix all in him. He was born to play the guitar.

Prince could play well for a singer and he's legendary performer Respectfully though, if you think he's an all time great guitarist, I don't think you know where the bar is. The skill of the best pros is mind bendingly above something like that clip, which is more about style.

OK, then describe for me then exactly what makes a great guitarist.

Legend has it he held back during rehearsal and literally told them all there’d be more during the show. I love how the camera angle makes it look like his guitar just disappeared after he threw it upward!

Yeah…outside of Michael, not too many cats could compete with Prince!

You have performers and you have entertainers. Prince was an entertainer and they knew that when they asked him to play with this group. Not "showboating,* he was just keeping true to how he played

Can’t think of too many people off the top of my head that were more talented than that cat. He might’ve been the greatest of all of them. Based on talent.

I don’t know enough about music or guitar virtuosity, but that performance was exhilarating, eye-opening and masterful when i first saw it. Too many great guitarists and performances to pick as the top pick. BB King, Clapton, SRV, Albert King, Robert Cray…

Stevie Ray doing Voodoo Child on Austin City Limits is pretty strong

It’s good but grossly overrated and it isn’t his song or melody line. Just jamming over a George Harrison song. It’s ridiculous the amount of attention it gets.

Whenever I am asked for the top guitarists of all time; In addition to Jeff Beck, Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, I always include Prince.

That’s a great 4. Hendrix played it in a way I’ve never quite seen since. It’s like his guitar was on drugs. Dude was a savant.

I paid, or rather my fiancé did, for 7th row from the stage to see Prince. It was the best concert of my life and I’ve seen many.

I’ve seen Prince too… And the only two people that ever put on a show like him that I’ve seen live was Michael Jackson in 1988 and pretty much every KISS concert.
