It returns to the patriarchal notion of care—where the husband is the primary caregiver for the wife or for their women—so when it’s used endearingly, whether for their husbands or someone else, say children, it’s used as a notion of care which has been or would be provided. Beyond the above explanation, it's also used as an endearing term in situations of pity—pele Oko mi—or during apologies, which ties back to the care I explained above.

WORLD-FAMOUS US-BASED NIGERIAN PAEDIATRIC SURGEON VISITS THE CONSTRUCTION SITE OF THE SOON-TO-BE-COMMISSIONED NEW MASSEY CHILDREN'S SPECIALIST REFERRAL HOSPITAL (NMCH) An unborn baby with a life-threatening tumour. A surgeon who lifted her from the womb, removed the tumour and returned her to her mother's womb to continue developing until she was born a healthy baby girl weeks later. Amazing! That surgeon is Nigerian and a friend of Mr Governor. This week, it was a pleasure to welcome him on a tour of the New Massey site. Professor Oluyinka Olutoye, Surgeon-in-Chief at Nationwide Children's Hospital in Columbus, Ohio, co-led that celebrated 2016 "baby born twice" operation. edition.cnn.com/2016/10/20/h… He was accompanied by his wife, Professor Toyin Olutoye, an accomplished paediatric anaesthesiologist and Anesthesiologist-in-Chief at Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago. I was joined by Dr Cecilia Mabogunje, Chair of the New Massey Operationalisation Committee, and Dr Olanike Olutekunbi, Medical Director of the existing Massey Street Children's Hospital. These are the Nigerian medical super-specialists we want to attract back to Lagos. We want our brains back in Nigeria, but government must be intentional about it. Prof Oluyinka Olutoye pledged his full support for Mr Governor's vision: to establish the New Massey as a regional referral centre for specialised paediatric care, ending the need for families to travel abroad for treatment. The 150-bed hospital will have dedicated paediatric and neonatal intensive care units, as well as specialist medical and surgical services. It will also train the next generation of paediatricians, paediatric specialists and subspecialists, and foster global research collaborations. With the Lagos State Smart Health Information Platform (SHIP) on track, Nigerian medical specialists abroad will also soon be able to take part virtually in clinical care in Lagos. To every Nigerian medical professional excelling abroad: Lagos is building. Come and see. Know someone who should see this? Tag them. #NewMasseyChildrensHospital #LagosHealth #NigerianExcellence #Paediatrics #ChildHealth

New York City, wetin dey sup? It was a joy to commemorate 34 years of the Nigerian Day Parade alongside the many Nigerian New Yorkers who fill our city with life. From the entrepreneurs whose businesses strengthen our neighborhoods, to the sounds of Afrobeats pouring out of graduation parties in Southeast Queens, and the aroma of Agege bread calling out to passersby in Brooklyn — the impact of Nigerian New Yorkers is felt across the five boroughs. Our city is richer in culture, stronger in community, and more vibrant because of your contributions.

This Is A Public School In Lagos, Nigeria
This is a public school I visited today in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada. The school is completely free, and the children are also fed every day. You see, children who grow up in this type of environment are usually different. This should be the standard we aim for in all our public schools across the South East. This should be the least we should demand from our governors. Anything less will not be accepted.

One major method Fashola adopted in managing indiscriminate dumping of refuse on the road median was to make residents around the area take responsibility. Odun-Ade-Coker Market and adjoining residents were dumping refuse on the Lagos-Badagry Expressway. He drove by one day, saw the rubbish, and ordered the immediate closure of the market. The association pleaded that after cleaning the median, they would become guards and ensure cleanliness. You must have a dose of W to govern Lagos; normal people are not plenty here, so bring your own.

Our children are quietly dropping one of the most important Cultural things we brought from home. In Canada 🇨🇦 , a lot of kids (White, Indian, Filipino) will walk past you at school, on the sidewalk or in the grocery store and act like they don’t know you. Plenty Nigerian children have now copied that same behaviour. I went to my children’s school. A Nigerian boy whose parents I know, and who knows me, almost walked straight into me on the walkway. No greeting. Nothing. Another one: I sent a 17-year-old Nigerian boy a polite message: “Hello Kunle, how are you? Can you schedule my barbing for Sunday after church?” His reply: “Hi” That’s it. Where did the respect go? Greeting is not “old school.” It is character. It is how we show we see people. Parents in the diaspora; how are you teaching your children to greet elders and people they know, even in a foreign land?

🚨 At the U20 Mayors Summit, Mamdani Says the Left Has Ceded “Quality of Life,” “Efficiency,” and “Fraud and Waste” to the Right This was one of the more interesting arguments Zohran Mamdani made today at the U20 Mayors Summit, and a reminder that he can be genuinely sharp when he drops the “central casting” routine. “In New York City, there are certain words that have taken on ideological associations.” “Quality of life has come to be seen as somehow a right-wing concern. Efficiency… has been taken on as a right-wing concern, rooting out fraud and waste, a right-wing concern.” Mamdani’s argument is that refusing to engage those issues actually helps the Right. “If you are staring at an example of social disorder or social inefficiency, and the left refuses to explain either why it has happened or how they will fix it, then the right gets to point at someone in the immediate area and say, ‘That’s who did it.’” The harder question is how much of the broader Left is actually prepared to follow the advice.

This is why the current structure of Lawma picking PSPs centrally does not work cos what will work for Ikoyi may not work for Bariga. In my opinion, LGs should be the ones to pick PSPs in partnership with CDAs. Let Lawma HQ only deal with industries and highways.
This neighbourhood initiative in Havana is worth studying: electric tricycles charged with solar power, collecting waste close to where people live. For Lagos, smaller collection vehicles have a clear role: reaching streets that compactors struggle to access and taking waste to transfer stations, where larger trucks handle the onward journey. They complement our PSP compactors, not replace them. We have already run successful pilots with tricycle collection vehicles in Ibeju-Lekki LCDA and Lagos Island LGA. Local entrepreneurs are also building electric tricycle systems. There is a practical foundation here to build on. For this model, payment would be on a pay-as-you-go basis. Collection teams would carry POS machines so residents can pay immediately for the service rendered. The charge should be clear before collection, with a receipt issued and each payment linked to a recorded pickup. This would operate within the LAWMA-regulated system, working with our PSP operators. But buying vehicles is only the beginning. Where will they discharge? Who will maintain them? Can charging and onward evacuation keep pace with daily collection? Can the vehicles carry their intended loads safely on our roads? Without these arrangements, we risk moving waste from one bottleneck to another. I am particularly interested in platforms that can be built, repaired and improved locally, with open-source designs that allow more engineers and businesses to contribute. We should be developing local capability alongside improving collection. A resident should not have to accept unreliable waste collection because their street is difficult for a large truck to reach. There is room for more players. I would welcome a conversation with the teams at @SiltechWorld, @Thinkbikesngl, @qoraymobility and @maxdrive_ai, and with @moniepointng and @OPay_NG on the payment side. This invitation is also open to EV engineers, fabricators, battery and charging specialists, software developers and entrepreneurs whose work we may not yet know. Let’s build local, open-source electric tricycle platforms for waste collection together. In Havana, Garbage Trucks Replaced by Solar-Powered Tricycles youtu.be/U4E-cd_XKs0?si=T4pQ… via @YouTube

When it comes to governance, I am an illiterate.. But I know for sure that provision of basic amenities will turn around the fortune of Nigeria.... Even the construction stage of the basic amenities is enough to spark economic growth.. Think about connecting the 774 LG headquarters on a singular highway first.
