There's a subset of people who apply Christian eschatology to the machine gods e.g. AI as the Antichrist, the demon, or the savior. Good paper on it: dl.acm.org/doi/pdf/10.1145/3…
I think the eschatology causes derangement, so it is being spoken about by people like the Pope, but in veiled language by the adults in the room.
Don't assume chatter is where truth havers spend time

Agreed. I feel like it's a "theological event" on a similar level to nukes, the Holocaust, or the Tower of Babel.
I have heard some interesting theological takes—eg LLMs as "made in our image" and "creating something out of everything"—but have not read any of the recent books
It’s all religious. All of the model welfare discourse is an outgrowth of EA which is an outgrowth of postchristian morality, which is an outgrowth of Christian morality, which is an outgrowth…
You've underestimated humanity's superiority complex. It is not even ASI yet. I imagine most post-human/AI-worship cults to emerge after AI can replace all humans at everything.
even if they considered it, institutional religions have established processes for figuring out stuff like this and they'd have VERY strong injunctions against premature blabbing
as for randos, pretty strong firewalls against attributing sentience-adjacent properties to machines
When everyone can talk directly to the god, one of the main points of religion disappears. No need for a prophet when you can just talk to the deity starting from $20 per month.
I don’t talk to end is nigh people
The religious people I see here seem to see digital consciousness being impossible dogmatically so maybe that helps dampen things
This is because people who take AI X risk seriously are mocked as "end times cultists" so denialists don't want to claim it and Safetyists focus on other arguments.
