Located in Fuzhou, Fujian province, Hualin Temple is the oldest surviving wooden structure south of the Yangtze River in China. Its architectural techniques had a profound influence on Buddhist temple architecture in Japan during the Kamakura period. In the 12th century, the Japanese monk Chōgen traveled by sea to Song-era China to study architectural techniques for the construction of Tōdai-ji Temple's Great Buddha Hall. During his visit, he studied building methods used at temples across Fujian, paying particular attention to the structural techniques and intricate details of Hualin Temple. He later brought these architectural ideas back to Japan. The style of the Great Buddha Hall at Tōdai-ji, later known as the "Daibutsuyō" style, spread throughout Japan. Located in Fuzhou, Fujian province, the Sanfang Qixiang (Three Lanes and Seven Alleys) Historic and Cultural Block dates back to the Jin Dynasty (265-420). It has preserved, largely intact, the traditional neighborhood layout of lanes and wards dating from the Tang and Song dynasties (618-1279), earning it the titles of a “living fossil of the ward system” and an “architectural museum of the Ming and Qing dynasties (1368-1911).” The district was once home to a remarkable gathering of prominent figures and intellectuals. Among them were Lin Zexu and Yan Fu, whose ideas, achievements and sense of responsibility left a profound mark on modern China. In recent years, Sanfang Qixiang has evolved from preserving its heritage to bringing it to life, finding new ways to make its historic legacy part of modern life.
