BREAKING: Germany has arrested former BND chief August Hanning in a major suspected espionage and treason case involving highly classified intelligence on Iran’s nuclear programme and the Russian military. According to investigations by WDR, NDR and Süddeutsche Zeitung, the Federal Public Prosecutor’s Office is investigating Hanning over suspected treasonous espionage, obtaining state secrets, attempted treason and intelligence-agent activity. Investigators from the Federal Criminal Police Office reportedly arrested Hanning early this morning at his home in Nordwalde near Münster. A second former senior BND employee, identified as Manfred D. was also arrested in Bavaria. D. allegedly supplied Hanning with highly classified BND information for money until at least 2022. Around 2,000 classified documents are reportedly believed to have been passed from D. to Hanning. Many were briefings prepared for the “ND Lage” at the Federal Chancellery, where the heads of Germany’s security agencies exchange intelligence. The documents reportedly included extremely sensitive assessments of Iran’s nuclear programme and Russia’s armed forces, as well as intelligence originating from foreign partner services. Investigators reportedly suspect that Hanning used at least some of the information to prepare a security analysis for a foreign intelligence service. According to WDR, NDR and SZ, the service involved in that case was not Russia. In another case, Hanning is alleged to have used information from classified BND documents in communications with a foreign agent. The case reportedly came to light after Hamburg investigators searched Hanning’s home and offices in September 2025 during a separate investigation connected to the Christina Block kidnapping case. They allegedly discovered an electronic storage device containing highly classified BND material that Hanning should not have possessed. The documents reportedly included material dating as recently as June 2022, years after Hanning had left the BND. The Hamburg LKA subsequently handed the material over to federal authorities, and the Federal Public Prosecutor’s Office opened a classified investigation in May 2026. For Germany’s intelligence community, the allegations are extremely serious. The material allegedly included intelligence supplied by foreign partner services. Any unauthorized disclosure of such information could seriously damage trust between the BND and allied intelligence services. The investigation remains ongoing, and the allegations against Hanning have not been proven in court.

🇩🇪 UPDATE: According to information from Der Spiegel, former BND chief August Hanning is suspected of having prepared a classified intelligence analysis for a contact linked to Azerbaijan’s intelligence service, using highly sensitive information obtained from the BND. Hanning is due to appear today before an investigating judge at Germany’s Federal Court of Justice (BGH) in Karlsruhe, who will decide whether he is placed in pre-trial detention. Hanning was arrested yesterday in North Rhine-Westphalia on suspicion of treasonous espionage, obtaining state secrets, attempted treason and intelligence-agent activity. His former BND office manager, Manfred D. is already in pre-trial detention. German prosecutors have not publicly confirmed Azerbaijan as the country involved and say it remains unclear whether the analysis ever reached its intended recipient.

How can the US trust any of its European partners at this point? Intelligence sharing needs to at least be paused for a top down reassessment.

A former intelligence chief arrested is rare anywhere. Worth waiting for the charges before drawing conclusions.

Now THIS is a counterintelligence nightmare. If a former intelligence chief is suspected of compromising secrets on Iran and Russia, investigators have to ask the scary question: what did he know, who may have gotten it, and how long has this been going on? #BND #Espionage #Counterintelligence

When Iranian say that evil Islamic regime is infiltrated in all Western countries institutions deeply , no one believes them. If before the West was in charge of the Islamic regime, now the regime is in charge of the whole West. The sent their agents since the beginning of revolution 1979

“to prepare a security analysis for a foreign intelligence service”, “communications with a foreign agent”… Stop being a chicken and say the name outloud man: MOSSAD. Traitor pos Hanning was on an Israeli payroll for a long time. Let’s c if Germany has balls to put him in jail.

Established facts: 1- He had close ties with Israel intelligence on other matters some even personal 2- some of the secretive material he illegally possessed was reared to Iran’s nuclear program So, how difficult is that to know who he was spying for 🤓

“Espionage” isn’t until it is. Secrets are passed routinely between agencies with a wink, a nod and payment in any number of ways. It’s all one big incestuous family until someone needs a fall guy. How convenient that the boogey men in this case are the current bad guys du jour for Europe-Russia, Iran and of course, Israel.

So in 2022, they allegedly discovered an electronic storage device containing highly classified BND material that Hanning should not have possessed, hence the Federal Public Prosecutor’s Office opened a classified investigation in May 2026. 4 freakin' years later. 😅

The scale is what stands out. Not a one-off leak, but an alleged arrangement from 2010 onward in which a still-serving chief of staff passed roughly 2,000 internal BND documents for payment, some used for an analysis for a foreign service that, according to WDR/NDR/SZ, was not Russia. That it surfaced only because of a separate kidnapping search makes the oversight failure look even worse. Allegations only for now.

The German intelligence service, the BND, has been repeatedly compromised by East German and Soviet agents throughout its history—a major reason why the Five Eyes countries have never fully trusted Germany with their most sensitive intelligence and top-secret documents.

A huge question is did those critical documents include sources and methods? Were there names of spies, contacts, collaborators, foreign assets, and more ? Did they disclose organizations involved? Communication systems? Technological methods? The damage could be far more than information gathered. It could involve severe damage to the system itself.

According to the Federal Prosecutor's Office, he is alleged to have passed on Controlled Unclassified and Confidential documents, in other words: chickenshit. Well, he was old and he needed the money (because he was broke). IMHO, the latter is the real scandal here. 1/2

Who would pay money for a German intelligence assessment? They don’t even have a military.
