When a guy like Bill Maher is the one saying it, people on the left are far more likely to listen, and in this case, his own audience was applauding him. He pointed to the DSA’s Marxist Unity Group, which openly names communism as its goal, cited a DSA figure calling to “elect more communists,” and then mentioned a pledge from two Democratic congressmen affirming capitalism, public safety and pride in America that only eight of 212 Democrats signed. Maher is not a Republican trying to make a conservative argument. He is talking to his own side about what he sees happening inside the Democratic Party, where people are pushing ideas like no police, no prisons, no borders, and in some cases openly embracing a completely different political and economic system. He even said his own vote is in play because he is not going to support someone who thinks the wrong side won the Cold War or who cheers the Intifada like it is a sporting event, and that is exactly why I am glad he said it. Conservatives can repeat these warnings over and over, and a lot of people on the left will dismiss them before they even listen, but when Bill Maher says it to his own audience and they applaud him, maybe some of those people will finally hear it.
