Some unusual LARP for today. The West German Luftwaffe in a Soviet invasion scenario. The Luftwaffe did something very strange with their F-4s. They bought them without the capability to launch radar guided missiles. They were planning on taking on the USSR with heat seekers only. I’ve heard multiple explanations for why that is, ranging from political to simply cheaping out to save money. As you can see here, it would have been a disadvantage but not an insurmountable one. Electronic warfare interferes with the Soviets ability to launch their own radar missiles until they’re almost in range of our AIM9Ls, which was a fantastic missile. But it does mean they got the first volley and killed one of my flight. It’s sufficient for MiG-23s and 21s, but up against 29s and SU-27s I think these guys would have been in trouble

At 8 miles I manage to burn through his jamming and get two radar missiles off, for one kill. I track onto another one and fire all of my heat seekers. They all miss. What then follows is an intense close range gunfight as he tries to force me to overshoot. I run out of ammo and decide to hightail it back to Syria. One kill for one loss. Pretty good by Syrian standards
