Today marks three years since Hamas’ horrific terror attacks that killed 1,200 Israelis. We remember those who were murdered, including eight Canadians, and again express our deepest condolences for their unimaginable loss. May their memories be a blessing Toronto is a global city and events around the world impact us deeply. More than ever, Torontonians must remain united against rising antisemitism, confront it wherever it appears, and reaffirm our collective right to live together in peace and safety.  As mayor, I will never waiver on my commitment to the safety of Jewish Torontonians. The Jewish community should not need police presence to go to a synagogue, or a community centre or simply to live proudly Jewish in our city. We will continue to invest in keeping communities safe and strong and will take action until every Torontonian can practice their faith without fear. We all must be dedicated to confronting antisemitism and hate in all its forms, and building a caring city where everyone belongs.

Today, the Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit will land in the bank accounts of more than 12 million Canadians. This year, a family of four will receive up to $1,890. That’s real relief to help with everyday costs.

I know a brilliant 34 year old Brazilian paediatric oncologist with degrees from top European universities, who speaks English, French, Portuguese, Spanish, and Italian. Literally the ideal immigrant. He was doing a research fellowship in Toronto. But even with my help (a former Immigration Minister,) he couldn’t get permanent residency last year, so left for a top hospital in Texas. Consider the opportunity cost for Canadian kids with cancer, or his potential fiscal and research contributions. Gone forever.😡 Meanwhile, folks who came here on dodgy study permits and as low skilled TFWs who barely speak basic English get PR to deal with the huge overhang of temporary residents and overstayers from the Trudeau years.
