In Fairfax County, Virginia, security staff asked Commonwealth’s Attorney Steve Descano and his chief deputy Kyle Manikas to pass through the public security entrance to the Fairfax County Courthouse. Security footage showed Descano becoming visibly upset, throwing an umbrella, while allegedly yelling at the private courthouse security guards. After viewing the footage, two lieutenants concluded that "both Attorneys demonstrated behavior unsuited for an officer of the court." The lieutenants then found themselves on a Brady list—an unreviewable list of "bad" cops—where they remain years later, despite being cleared of wrongdoing. They're far from the only ones. Philly's Soros-backed DA Larry Krasner is FINALLY facing accountability. GEORGE BOCHETTO: “Aside from Judge Diamond's referral to the DOJ, the Pennsylvania Supreme Court recently ruled that he is so out of control that from now on, if he tries to do any exoneration, he must first get the consent of the Attorney General's office. AUSTIN MAN charged with murdering a man over a diamond watch just walked out of jail after a judge cut his bond. The victim posted photos of cash and a diamond Cartier watch online. Police say six people spent two weeks planning to take them. In Nov 2024, they blasted into his apartment, assaulted a woman, pointed a gun at a child, and shot the victim dead. Judaren Forbes, 22, is indicted for murder. He posted bond last week. Another judge then set bond at $1 on his open gun cases. When the victim was killed, Forbes was already out on bond in four cases. Highlights: 2022: Arrested carrying a gun. January 2023: Video shows him running into the street at a house party and firing an AR at a passing car. Prosecutors knocked the felony down to a misdemeanor. 60 days in jail. March 2023: Arrested for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. DA Jose Garza's office declined to file it. Christmas Eve 2023: Arrested with another Glock. Out the next day. September 2024: He fled a trooper from a street takeover, crashed into another driver, hurled his Glock off an I-35 overpass, and jumped after it. Hours later he swore to police his car had been stolen. Ten weeks later, a man was killed. Five of the six home invasion suspects were already out on violent cases. The murder victim’s mother said they "should have never been free on bond." Now Forbes is back on the street.

This is shockingly brazen stuff. The argument is that the effects of ALPRs on crime cannot be discerned without carefully controlled quasiexperimental research, but the effects of ALPRs on abuse can be discerned just by making lists of abuse cases involving ALPRs. It actually has to be one or the other. Either we care about estimating the counterfactual, or we just make lists of incidents and call it a day. You can't just pick which standard you want depending on which is convenient for your preferred conclusion.

There are two sets of laws in Arlington and Fairfax.

Arlington’s Commonwealth’s Attorney testified that her office has a DUI policy specifically for DACA recipients. In a small number of cases, prosecutors have considered changing a DUI to a different first-degree misdemeanor so the defendant can renew DACA status. (We don’t have first-degree misdemeanors - they are called Class 1 misdemeanors - surprised an elected prosecutor doesn’t know that). She says the defendant is still held accountable and the original DUI charge remains visible. But DACA status is a factor in the plea resolution, one that an American citizen charged with the same offense cannot invoke. Quite a few politicians were tripping over themselves trying to get in front of a camera in the immediate aftermath of this one & made some pretty inflammatory comments. TBD how those comments age - but local media already finding problems w/ the alien & his attorney’s story.
