In this 1984 BBC studio performance of ‘Blue Monday’, New Order look almost unaware that they are creating one of the most influential electronic tracks in music history — just four people in a room, headphones on, casually shaping the future of dance music.

Thanks for sharing never seen / heard this before. Got to say, @peterhook guitar always, always sounds better live than when recorded. Especially on Thieves Like Us.

I used to hit the Chicago dance floors hard whenever this song dropped. I still spin it on vinyl and I know my kids have it in their playlists. Blue Monday never seems to age…

Summer of ‘83 I would listen to this endlessly on the cassette player in my car and in my mind I was the coolest guy in town

I rode my bike around the UK and Europe in Summer of 1984, and remember it as the summer of Bronski Beat.

They created it in 83, this was a live performance and they weren’t happy after a difficult journey to get there I believe

"Blue Monday" was first released in March of 1983. So they "created" the "track" before this August 1984 BBC studio session.

And they tried to stop those repetitive beats... And they tried to stop those repetitive beats.... And they tried to stop those repetitive beats....
1/5. No maps. No internet. Just a payphone number at 10pm and 10,000 people in an abandoned warehouse. In the summer of 1989, authorities thought they controlled the territory. They monitored motorways, set checkpoints and waited to stop the assembly before it began. They didn't understand decentralised routing. The movement coordinated through phone boxes, decoy convoys and quiet discipline. The police prepped for a static target but were unprepared for a fluid, permissionless network. 🧵👇

Saw New Order in concert, this is pretty much what it looked like. At one point they all walked off stage and the music kept going.

They had already recorded it the previous year. This was a TV appearance they agreed to do but at least one of them nearly didn’t make it to the studio in time and was seriously hungover…

Après, ce sont les ex-membres de Joy Division, après le suicide de Ian Curtis, donc c'est impossible pour eux de faire de la merde, ce sont des génies !

I love watching bands make some of the most influential music in history! They have no idea what ahead and just embracing the moment. Fascinating! 😀

The song had already notable airplay upon its first release in early 1983. Hence, if this is really from the writing session, it must have happened earlier than 1984. Otherwise, this is just a regular rendition promoting the single.

For those who are unaware, there were "Writing Session" versions of the track which were released in recent years. They were both recorded sometime in 1982. youtu.be/Q0pIDCvNPRk youtu.be/zx0ZoDYYI_o

This was part of an all night love music thing, as I recall. I remember holding a microphone to the television speaker to record their set, then wishing I hadn't.
