I’ve always been a strong supporter of immigration. I came to America legally, built a life here, started companies, and spent decades arguing that America is stronger when talented people come here and contribute ..and I still believe that.
But the labor market is changing fast because of technology.
AI is already reducing the number of people companies need in coding, testing, documentation, maintenance, customer support, analysis, and other white-collar work.
A project that used to need 100 engineers may soon need 30. The other 70 jobs don’t move from Bengaluru to Boston...they go away.
And this is just the start.
That has to be part of the immigration debate.
If companies need fewer workers, why are we continuing to bring in large numbers of workers on the horrible H-1B visa?
H-1B was supposed to fill real shortages but over time, body shops and labor-arbitrage firms turned it into a source of cheaper labor, with workers stuck for decades in green-card limbo and dependent on their employer.
American workers have been asked to train their replacements this has never been acceptable. Indian professionals who came here legally and played by the rules end up taking the blame for a system they didn’t create.
H-1B should be abolished all together. Another cap, fee, or reform won’t solve the basic problem.
If someone is truly exceptional and has skills we genuinely cannot find here, create a narrow path for that person. We don’t need a huge lottery filled with ordinary jobs classified as specialty occupations.
We also need to look seriously at L-1, J-1, OPT, CPT, and other programs that add workers to the labor market.
Let's not pretend that the world is the same as it was 20 years ago, it isn't.
