Local news is collapsing. That is real. The answer is not a three-year, taxpayer-funded list of approved sources. A directory built to “help policymakers decide where interventions are needed” is an intervention. It tells editors what the government considers legitimate and tells readers which voices the state prefers
Canadians do not need Ottawa to curate their news diet. They need governments that stop treating journalism as a program to manage. Pay for it, rate it, or meddle in it and you no longer have a free press. You have a state-approved press on the payroll

Man Charged in Child Sexual Assault Investigation Was on Bail for Previous Child Sexual Offences
A man in Windsor is facing new charges after police allege he sexually assaulted two children in the city’s west end while he was already bound by a release order stemming from previous child sexual assault charges.
Shortly before 10 p.m. on August 13, 2026, officers responded to a report of a disturbance in the 3400 block of Bloomfield Road.
Police allege an adult male approached two boys, aged 8 and 10, who were playing in the area. The suspect allegedly attempted to kiss the 10-year-old boy, who was able to avoid the advance, before allegedly kissing the 8-year-old boy on the cheek twice.
Shortly before 10:30 p.m., officers located the suspect in an alley behind the 3300 block of Peter Street. Police said the suspect fled on foot but was apprehended following a brief struggle, with assistance from K-9 Officer Link.
Qasim Sabi, 22, has been charged with:
-Sexual assault (x 2)
-Sexual interference (x 2)
-Failure to comply with a release order
Police said the suspect was subject to a release order related to charges laid in May 2025, including sexual assault, two counts of sexual interference, assault and failure to comply with a release order.
The 2025 charges followed an earlier investigation that began in August 2023, when the Windsor Police Major Crimes Unit received a report that a 17-year-old girl had been sexually assaulted by a male on numerous occasions. He was charged with sexual assault, assault and failure to comply with a release order.
