US Government Misstated COVID Vaccine Risk The British Medical Journal (BMJ) reports that during the COVID vaccine rollout in 2021, US health officials used a safety-monitoring algorithm that they knew was inadequate but ignored the problem. At the time, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) compared reports of adverse events after each vaccine with reports after other vaccines. But by 2021 more than 90 per cent of reports were about the (very similar) mRNA vaccines from Pfizer and Moderna. Because of this, adverse events which occured for both vaccines would not have statistically stood out. The BMJ extracted this information from internal emails it obtained under the Freedom of Information Act. These emails reveal that FDA employees Ana Szarfman and statistician William DuMouchel warned Peter Marks (then the FDA’s vaccine regulator) about this problem in early 2021. They proposed an improved method, but higher FDA administration ignored the warning. As a consequence, the algorithm failed to flag myocarditis (an inflammation of the heart muscle), which was later found to be a side-effect of mRNA vaccination. 👀Breakdown of @Nscale’s S-1 and balance sheet by @realMeetKevin. It’s mostly a bearish take. Summary: - Revenue in 2024 and 2025 came from crypto-miner leases and related IT support. - Expenses exceeded revenue in 2025 and 2026. - Nscale began pivoting to AI and GPUs in 2022. - The S-1 mentions deficiencies in the 2024 and 2025 financial statements. -The CEO will receive $350 million in stock once the company goes public. - Nscale does not have the funding needed to deliver on its roughly $44 billion Anthropic contract. The IPO is partly intended to address that. - It has 25,000 active GPUs, while its commitments require 461,000 GPUs. The closer Nscale trades to the value of its expected contracted revenue of $103 billion, the more money it can raise and the better its position when negotiating cheaper loans. According to the S-1, only $2.6 billion of that contracted revenue is fully active. Delivering the rest will require a major buildout and significant capital expenditure. Compared with $IOND, the risks are much higher. Nscale has 1,000 employees and needs substantial funding to purchase expensive Nvidia GPUs. Much of the risk, or the bubble, sits with Nvidia and companies such as IREN, Nscale, and Nebius. If demand for compute continues to grow and Nvidia maintains its GPU moat, that risk falls considerably. One major strength Kevin does not mention is Nscale’s data-center experience across multiple jurisdictions. This could give the company an advantage in sovereign AI, where user data must be processed and stored within the user’s own country.
