💪 What drives age-related handgrip weakness?
A new study by Gregory M. Shaw and colleagues investigates the neural contributions to age-related declines in handgrip strength using multi-finger force deficit and dual-task testing.
The findings provide new insight into how neural factors may contribute to age-related muscle weakness, highlighting the importance of looking beyond muscle strength alone to better understand the mechanisms underlying physical decline with aging.

🔬 LAPTM5, RPE senescence, and subretinal fibrosis: uncovering a potential mechanism of aging-related retinal changes
A new study by Xiaowei Yang and colleagues investigates the role of LAPTM5 in retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) senescence and subretinal fibrosis.
The study identifies the LAPTM5–WWP2–OPTN mitophagy cascade and cGAS/STING activation as potential mechanisms linking LAPTM5 to these age-related retinal changes, providing new insights into the molecular pathways involved in retinal aging.

Calling all AGE trainee members! The @lrc_bio - Longevity Research Circle is hosting a Fall 2026 Journal Club on Epigenetics & Aging — a small, interactive series open to graduate students, postdocs, research staff, undergrad researchers, and other early-career scientists across institutions and regions.
The series kicks off with an intro meeting the week of October 12, followed by three biweekly Zoom sessions. Rather than a full presentation, each participant presents and discusses just one key figure during a session — a great low-pressure way to dig into primary literature and connect with trainees across career stages.
Attendance: the intro meeting plus at least 2 of the 3 sessions.

Health care costs and affordability are among the top concerns driving Americans' money worries. For Medicare beneficiaries, and those who care for them, open enrollment is a good time to revisit plans to see whether coverage changed before the 2027 plan year kicks in.
Join us and @thehill on October 28 for a timely discussion with policymakers, open enrollment experts, and advocates on the future of Medicare benefits, the impact of drug price negotiations, and what beneficiaries need to know for 2027.

With protein-fortified everything now filling grocery shelves, a sweeping review of more than 350 studies suggests many people may actually be better off eating less of it. Led by Dudley Lamming and Bailey Knopf — a 2026 AGE Trainee Travel Award winner — of the @UWMadison, the review found that lower protein intake consistently improves metabolism, reduces cellular damage, and activates a hormone called FGF21 that boosts energy use and lowers inflammation; in mouse studies, higher FGF21 levels were linked to longer lifespan.
The catch: this applies mainly to relatively sedentary adults, since active individuals still benefit from higher protein intake for muscle growth and recovery.

Can targeting cellular senescence help protect bone health during chemotherapy?
In a new study, David J. Izquierdo and colleagues investigated whether targeting cellular senescence could mitigate chemotherapy-induced bone loss in both young and aged mice.
The findings suggest that senescence-targeting strategies may help counteract chemotherapy-associated skeletal deterioration, highlighting cellular senescence as a potential contributor to treatment-related bone loss across different ages.
