Gregory Clark is one of just a few authors—with Popper, Ayn Rand and Henry Hazlitt—who completely changed my worldview; in his case, from a complete free-market institutionalist, where I believed that, with the right institutions/incentives (property rights, free markets, low taxation, stable currency, etc.), you should be able to make Singapore out of almost any country, to something much closer to what I call “Grandma’s Theory of the Wealth of Nations”: rich nations are rich because their people are smart and hard-working. His work is top-notch, completely data-driven—a humongous amount of collected data (his English genealogy contains more than 422,000 people), using simple, justifiable, easy-to-derive (from multiple angles, from economics, genomics, etc.) equations that fit the data (his book on the Malthusian world is one of the most beautiful and elegant bodies of scientific knowledge), ingenious ways to measure things and make the right statistical corrections, etc.—absolutely Nobel-worthy. (These results are not even controversial in genomics: everybody agrees that polygenic predictors are accurate at predicting cognitive traits, educational attainment, social status etc., and the data is just getting clearer and clearer on this (even though nobody is getting any money for these results, even in genomics—they are mostly side effects of other studies). It's just that they are completely absent from social sciences) The trouble is that this work is toxic, and everybody knows it means career trouble, so nobody wants to touch it with a six-foot pole. - Just look at what happens here: he can't get his book, containing some of the highest-quality and most important intellectual work, published by any academic publisher. But also: - You get canceled and disinvited. - You can't get funding—nobody wants to fund results suggesting that their work doesn't matter for “changing the world,” and Greg's work shows exactly that; in this book, for example, that policy (whatever you do—welfare state, free education, etc.) doesn't matter for social mobility. - The incentive structure is such that even when you do publish, on the margin you get much harsher treatment, people look much harder to find mistakes and reasons why they don't have to accept your results, as opposed, for ex., to when you are Acemoglu or Raj Chetty (showing that neighborhood environments heavily dictate long-term financial success), where you can publish flawed and wrong papers, but nobody is trying hard to disprove them b/c they are bringing money and power etc, etc. So, can we get some rich (or influential) people to find a ways to fund prime-quality, high-importance but unpopular work like this? @elonmusk @pmarca @BillAckman @chamath @peterthiel @DavidSacks @JTLonsdale @balajis @naval @rabois @patrickc @friedberg @brian_armstrong @garrytan @collision @sama @bhorowitz @Jason @cremieuxrecueil @tylercowen Not b/c it's necessarily right in every such instance. But b/c we need to know whether it's right.

Portland, Ore. (Oct. 4) — Antifa destroyed the gay-owned Clarklewis restaurant after rallying a mob there to attack a table of customers accused of being white nationalists. The restaurant has been forced to shut down for now because of the damage and traumatized staff. @PortlandPolice does not monitor Antifa's terrorism in the city, so the group has been able to organize deadly violence for years. John Hacker, the violent Antifa militant and convicted criminal who has attacked multiple victims, including me at a gym, was photographed outside the venue with his comrades. ngocomment.com

A new regulation would be just another band-aid, and without eliminating underlying reasons - cheap money - would lead to more bad consequences.

So there'd new companies have emerged that address that market repair request? Why didn't it happen?

A student notices a curious gap in the discourse at Harvard: “Examining the public comments of Harvard’s last four presidents, I was unable to find one reference to radical Islamism, even while they addressed major attacks.” “In my searches of Harvard’s course catalog, I found just one class mentioning either ‘Islamism’ or ‘Islamist.’” “Or take the offerings outside class…. When I searched for ‘Islamism’ or ‘Islamist’ in the Harvard Gazette, I found only a single event described across all of campus in the last two years.” “Why aren’t we talking about this?”
