Did you know that in 2025, Trump put together a group of scientists to battle the climate agenda, which was squashed by geoengineering enthusiasts? Energy Secretary Chris Wright assembled the Climate Working Group to produce the report: A Critical Review of Impacts of Greenhouse Gas Emissions on the U.S. Climate, released July 29, 2025.
The five independent scientists included Judith Curry, John Christy, Steven Koonin, Ross McKitrick, and Roy Spencer.
Their report found no clear long-term increase in US hurricanes, floods, droughts, or tornadoes in the historical data; that climate models often run too “hot”; that extra CO₂ helps plants and benefits US agriculture; that sea level has risen about 8 inches since 1900 with no obvious acceleration in US gauges; and that aggressive US cuts would barely change the global climate.
Like COVID dissent, their findings were attacked as “junk science.” The Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) and Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS), large green groups that push aggressive emissions rules and Democratic-aligned climate policies, sued, claiming the working group was illegally secret and unbalanced.
EDF has directed millions of dollars into solar geoengineering research, co-founded the Solar Radiation Management Governance Initiative (SRMGI), an international NGO supporting governance frameworks for global Solar Radiation Management research, and runs its own SRM research program funding studies on darkening the Earth.
UCS has participated in many high-level discussions on geoengineering. One example is the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) committee that produced the 2021 report Reflecting Sunlight: Recommendations for Solar Geoengineering Research and Research Governance. (11 US Congress members and the President have called for a review of NASEM for manipulating climate data in their training manuals given to judicial judges.)
On January 30, 2026, a federal judge ruled and they won: the group violated federal advisory rules.
