Australia has a massive cyber security problem I discovered vulnerabilities on NDIS service provider websites. Which leaks personally identifiable information about patients, employeers, suppliers, their addresses, first and last name, etc I reported the vulnerability to the NDIS provider in Feb 2022, March 2022, June 2022. I reported the vulnerability to Australian Signals Directorate's ACSC in 2022. I reported the vulnerability to to Cyber.gov.au followed all the correct procedures I checked the URL today and guess what? It's still leaking personal data: 4 years later. The vulnerability is still live. You can still see peoples personally identifiable information from a misformed URL. It's publicly available. To anyone right now. I have seen many such cases. But this is the most egregious.

Great things happen when Bitcoiners join forces! Over 30 people learned completely FREE what Bitcoin is truly about, and 2 have already become users of the Bitcoin network, now holding their own private keys after attending our very affordable Self Custody workshops. This was only possible through the collaboration between @stacked_bitcoin, the best Bitcoin-only exchange in NZ, run by proper maxis; @RadicalInvest, pioneers in the industry enabling Bitcoin exposure in kiwis retirement plans (KiwiSaver); and ourselves, Bitcoin Journey. Hopefully, the first collaboration of many, helping deliver free, and sustainable, Bitcoin education across Aotearoa. Big thanks to Criterion Law Firm and the @TheBitcoinBasin, whose support allows us to run workshops just like these ones, free and open to everyone in Queenstown twice a month. Onwards!

Talk about slowly then .... Just got off a call with a waste mgmt consortium who have 1. significant methane emissions on multiple landfills affecting air quality, tourism, human health 2. concluded the only viable solution is Bitcoin mining 3. are asking when we can visit They don't want one Bitcoin on of their landfills, they want it piloted on one, then rolled out to all the other major emitters. And because methane is such a powerful greenhouse gas, just one of these landfill will offset the emissions of a whole midsized city. 3 years ago, landfill owners didn't want to know us/ Fellow-environmentalists scoffed at the idea Bitcoin mining could do anything good for the environment. Fellow investors said things like "remind me the name of your fund, so I'm sure never to invest" The impact that Bitcoin can make for people and planet is only just beginning.

After my recent post about this ultra cool simulator for every Bitcoin hardware and software wallet, @stephanlivera shared his interview with the builder of this awesome website. Will watch that later today 👀
Wallet Playground for learning Bitcoin self custody with Piers Macrae | SLP767 @mineracks demonstrates Wallet Playground and explains why hardware wallets are signing devices, not wallets. Thanks Stephan, for sharing that! Will listen to that. And I think this could be intersting for like everyone who thinks about moving to another Hardware Wallet, Software Wallet or who just thinks about moving the setup.

After my post someone sent me the simulator of @mineracks which is amazing! walletplayground.com/ You can simulate: - any Hardware Wallet - any Software Wallet And let them communicate on Signet. It is a bit buggy cause he probably has the VPS architecture I had in the beginning but the communication between the Hardware Wallet and companion App works very well. Also probably it makes problems when to many people are using the site, as they are probably all using the same devices at the same time.😅 Highly recommend checking that out.
Rob built a @SeedSigner Simulator in the browser. I did the same for @SpecterDIY even month before. But my build was bad. It run the Specter as a simulator on a VPS and connected to the VPS to the browser. Allowing only 5 persons at once using it. Never released it cause it was buggy. Only internally for testing the new Specter Firmware variations we are building. But now I saw how elegant Rob had implemented it. I'm now also rebuilding mine on micropyhtong directly allowing to simulate SD-Card, QR-Scanner and Smartcards. Updates soon

To those responsible for the theft of bitcoin from the Liquid Network: Blockstream will not pay a ransom for the return of stolen funds. Taking assets without authorization and withholding their return is a crime, not responsible disclosure. It is not white-hat activity. It is theft. We have engaged in good faith in an effort to secure the return of stolen user funds and protect the broader Bitcoin community. That effort should not be mistaken for acceptance of the actions taken nor of the terms being demanded. We will not be a party to the precedent that open-source software developed for the good of the Bitcoin community should subject its developers to paying a ransom that far exceeds their economic participation. Bitcoin is hard money and can’t be minted without costs, Bitcoin doesn’t haircut users to pay a ransom. To the Bitcoin community: We are fighting for what we believe in, for the users whose funds were taken, and for the principles on which Bitcoin was built. The community has demonstrated incredible resolve with teams of people dedicating their time in support of each other to identify and patch vulnerabilities in each other's products and systems. We are all driven by the mission that Bitcoin is the single best asset, for every person, company, and institution on the planet to invest, use, and build on. The world is a different place with the advancements of AI, and the Bitcoin community has responded with force to combat that threat. Damage has been done, battles have been lost, but on the whole the Bitcoin community is gaining ground in the war with bad actors. We want to thank the community for those efforts, for your support in hardening the network, helping users recover funds, and for your support in our assertion that crime does not deserve rewards. To those holding the stolen bitcoin: There is still an opportunity to resolve this responsibly. The bitcoin can be returned and we can revert to the standard of white-hat principals. However, if the funds are not returned, we will pursue every lawful avenue available to us. We will work with law enforcement, exchanges, service providers, forensic specialists, and other relevant parties to trace and recover the assets and identify those responsible. More importantly, Bitcoin is transparent by design and the community is made up of the most sophisticated engineers, cryptographers, and white-hat hackers globally. Transactions do not disappear, and neither does the evidence they leave behind. We will not pay for the return of stolen property. We will not abandon our users. The Bitcoin community will not stop pursuing the funds. Return the bitcoin.

Freedom to speak in open society The tightening collar around Australians is utterly dismaying to see; in the last few weeks: - ASIO gained the power to pick up and detain people - in isolation and without communication or representation; obscene penalties for mentioning this occurred - the eKaren (eSafety Commissioner) can now compel people to testify, removing the defence of self-incrimination, with heavy penalties for refusal These types of changes aren’t the result of the current government alone, the prior administrations proposed and championed the foundations upon which these newest and most egregious changes rest Historically, these are the types of powers we were taught in school were the dangerous and repressive, and enabled (for example) the far right Nazis and the far left Stasi Yet here are Australian politicians, on both sides of the political spectrum, building the exact frameworks we were taught were so dangerous, and ultimately led to the failure of entire nation states If we cannot openly critique ideas, events, proposed or actual changes, then we cannot exist as a free and open society - a harsh simple truth we appear destined to learn once more The solutions are clearly not in politics but in technology which protect citizens and enable free speech.

Bitcoin education event at Victorian Parliament House, organised by @AusBTCIndBody . We discussed how Bitcoin mining can help address energy costs by monetising excess and otherwise wasted energy. Great to see open-minded MPs like @_davidlimbrick taking the time to attend, listen and engage with the Bitcoin industry.

How incredibly stupid is @AlboMP ‘s new CGT for all the millions of Australians who own shares or crypto etc outside super. Who will pay for this loss of productivity? @AlboMP ? This failed new CGT will destroy productivity for all Australians investors. Read the @facebook post👇 Another unexpected impact! #StoptheCGT #JoinWARonCGT “Want to understand just how bloody ridiculous Australia's new CGT system becomes from 1 July 2027? Not just for shares either... crypto too. It's faaaaarked!!!!!!! 🤡 Say an ordinary Aussie builds up 8,240 BHP shares across 12 purchases plus 6 dividend reinvestment parcels, all bought at different prices, dates and brokerage costs. If those shares are held across 30 June 2027, the law can effectively reset their cost base around 1 July 2027 using market value, with the pre 2027 notional gain deferred until you eventually sell and potentially still eligible for the old 50% discount, while eligible post 2027 gains move into the new CPI indexation system. Now sell only 4,350 shares in 2032 and start the completely f*kd accounting process! First identify which acquisition parcels were actually disposed of, calculate their allocated sale proceeds and brokerage, calculate the deferred pre 2027 gain attributable to those parcels, THEN calculate the post 2027 indexed cost base separately for each relevant parcel where indexation applies... Indexed cost = eligible cost-base amount × CPI for the quarter you sell ÷ CPI for the quarter that particular cost was incurred. Except the third cost base element isn't indexed, different dividend reinvestment purchases and later eligible costs can have completely different CPI starting points and indexation itself generally requires the 12 month holding rule to be satisfied. THEN calculate each post 2027 capital gain, aggregate the parcels, apply current year capital losses in the legislated order, starting with deferred non-residential gains before moving through the other categories, repeat the sequencing AGAIN for carried forward losses, apply whatever remaining concessions actually qualify, add everything back together and THEN, if the minimum tax provisions apply to you, calculate your minimum tax capital gain after those CGT steps, multiply it by 30%, calculate your normal income tax WITH that gain, calculate your normal income tax AGAIN without that minimum tax capital gain, subtract one liability from the other, compare the result against the 30% calculation and potentially pay the difference. Congratulations... what used to be "sell shares, subtract cost base, apply losses and potentially halve an eligible long term gain" can now become 18 acquisition parcels + 18 different cost histories + a 30 June 2027 market valuation + deferred historical gains + post 2027 indexed cost bases + multiple CPI ratios + brokerage allocations + statutory loss sequencing + ordinary income-tax modelling + another 30% minimum-tax calculation. Seriously... WTF!!!! These aren't derivatives, offshore structures or some billionaire tax scheme... THEY'RE JUST SHARES!!! If an Aussie needs advanced accounting software and historical CPI tables just to work out the Government's cut of an investment bought with money they've already paid TAX on, maybe the problem isn't that CGT needs another "reform"... maybe CGT itself needs to GO!!! ZERO CGT FOR AUSTRALIAN CITIZENS. Reward people for investing, taking risks and building wealth instead of turning success into a f*kd mathematics exam so complex you're paying an accountant thousands just to figure out what the bloody Government says you owe!!!” facebook.com/share/p/1EUNbtR…

We are aware of a security incident on @Liquid_BTC. Purported white-hat hackers have withdrawn ~4,000 BTC (~$320 million) from the Liquid Federation wallet. The @Blockstream team is working on contacting them on-chain with a signed message. What we know so far is that the funds were withdrawn via the SideSwap PAK (Peg-out Authorization Key), but that key was not compromised, nor were any others. Exchanges have been notified and have already paused (or will pause) LBTC deposits and withdrawals. Other Liquid assets such as USDT, DePix, and RWAs are unaffected by this security incident. Bridge nodes have been temporarily disabled, so no new transactions can be submitted to the network. Effectively, the Liquid sidechain is paused until this issue is resolved. Liquid wallets will be impacted, and we're sorry for any inconvenience. Federation members are actively working on resolving this so we can restore normal network activity. You can monitor the situation via @mempool's liquid.network site below: mempool.space/address/bc1qdl…
