Excited to announce that I've been leading research at Blockspace for multiple months now. More than 90% of blocks are constructed out-of-protocol. Improving this process will benefit Ethereum, originators, validators, builders... When Ethereum and ETH win, Blockspace wins. Expect tangible improvements within weeks.

Two out of the three top multi-party blocks by value uplift landed in the last 2 days. Don't expect these to stay on the leaderboard for long. New significant performance improvements are already in testing. These will allow MPBC to support even larger blocks.

7/ Record Fees 🫰: The block with the highest value uplift to date landed during the last 7 days, adding 220% to the proposer bid! In this block, a total of 0.0532 ETH was added. This value is split between the proposer and the builders and operators who contributed.

Here's the multi-party block with the highest gas uplift to date. MPBC increased gas usage by 1346%, adding 24.5M gas. It's Slot: 15213880 The highest number of transactions added to date is 810. Assuming users would have waited ~12s for the next slot, it saved them 2.7h. You can find it on the dashboard (Slot: 15180396).

3/ ⛽️ the Gas Usage: When observing transactions/blobs added per MPBC block, most have similar numbers of transactions added. However, some extreme outliers add far more transactions, with the top 1% of multi-party blocks exceeding 147% of gas added!

All top blocks by gas added are by newer and smaller base builders. This includes 24.5m gas added to one block (+1346%)! MPBC rewards providing faster and more predictable inclusion to users. Blocks from smaller builders typically have comparatively more space available. Check out the MPBC dashboard to view every single MPBC block.
Multi-party block construction could make smaller builders more competitive. Builders earn when they contribute to other's blocks, or when others contribute to their blocks. -> The less flow a builder has, the higher the relative value that can be added to its blocks. -> The less likely a builder is to win a slot, the higher the relative revenue from adding TXs to others' blocks. Curious how this will reflect on bids.

Quick Slots are S-Tier. We contributed to this because the best way to improve Ethereum is to make transactions cheap, fast, and reliable. This depends on block size, slot time, and the block construction pipeline. With Quick Slots, MPBC, and gas limit increases we're taking strides towards a better Ethereum.

Our more detailed take:
We want Ethereum to produce the highest grade blockspace. One requirement is providing end consumers predictable inclusion. Users should know when their transaction will be included in a block and what it will cost. Quick Slots are a significant leap in this direction and something we strongly support. With this upgrade, your transaction is either included faster or given another opportunity faster. Since blocks will have less time to reach the network, we also think Quick Slots should arrive with the performance engineering EIPs such as 8131, 8279, and 8334 provide to help keep the network at peak performance. We are excited to support @ethlabs_org and others in this push! Read more on their post below.

Multi-Party Block Construction (MPBC) is live! Over the past 24h, 3% of Ethereum blocks were multi-party blocks. Since August 28th, >20k transactions have been included faster through MPBC. MPBC means larger & more robust blocks, faster and more predictable inclusion. Highlights to date include blocks that gained 810 additional transactions, or almost 14x the gas. MPBC comes with comprehensive docs and metrics. You can check every multi-party block out on our dashboard. MPBC will continue to improve and scale. Looking forward to taking the next step together with the many teams that make up the Blockspace Forum. Let's make transaction inclusion fast and predictable, and Ethereum the best it can be.

Multi-party block construction will have very clear, visual, and jargon-free docs. Everybody uses the transaction pipeline and it should be possible to get the gist in 5 min.

The best way to improve Ethereum is to make transactions cheap, fast, and reliable. This depends on block size and slot time (throughput), and the block construction pipeline. We're shaping up nicely! Glamsterdam and quick slots will improve throughput. FOCIL and MPBC will improve how blocks are constructed by providing faster and more predictable inclusion for all types of transactions.

ETH will succeed if many institutions and users have vested interest in its success. It's all a market, this is the way to be sustainable, authentic & credible, and I believe @Blockspace_ETH to be a strong step in this direction.
Agree ETH-native institutions should be top priority for Ethereum

Agree. What's the fundamental property of distributed block building? Arguably, it's how predictable inclusion is. You could say that inclusion risk reduces to exogenous factors like network jitter. So discretion is minimized, and builders compete on efficiency. FOCIL provides this inclusion predictability for transactions the protocol can see in the mempool. MPBC increases the inclusion predictability for transactions that are known to any builder, even if they are not in the mempool.
More and more I started to think of FOCIL as part of the block construction story in a broader distributed block building process, than as a consensus service tied to staking, PoS and the fork choice. I believe leveraging this will be key to 1) Make full use of a large community of passionate node runners who have Ethereum’s best interests at heart, boosting inclusion guarantees. What’s more important than helping users find their way onchain? 2) Achieving fast slots and fast finality to make Ethereum fast and increase network utility and value. Being slow can be a security issue for users, when third-party services fill gaps that the best version of Ethereum could fill itself.

FOCIL is essential and multi-party block construction (MPBC) is complementary to it.
Fully compatible. FOCIL guarantees inclusion for transactions the protocol is aware of. MPBC increases the probability of inclusion for transactions any builder is aware of.

Fully supportive of this proposal. Shorter slots make inclusion faster and more predictable. This stimulates user activity, improves censorship resistance, and creates new value. This is a one-time refactor that can accommodate even more ambitious slot time reductions in the future.
Today I will be proposing faster slots for inclusion in Hegotá, to All Core Devs. Faster slots improve the value of Ethereum blockspace. This is value that accrues to Ethereum users, to the network as a whole, and to ETH in particular. While we cannot expect more than a moderate slot time reduction in Hegotá, there is a one-time cost to pay for any future slot time reductions, and Hegotá is likely the last window before long where it is sensible to pay this one-time cost. This opens the door for continuous improvements as fast finality, post-quantum and zk roadmaps progress. If you would like to support directly this EIP, or discuss possible contract or infra issues related to a slot time change, my DMs are open.

Multi-party block construction grows the "size of the pie" by allowing additional transactions to be added to blocks. Glad it's coming, and linking the post outlining the v0 below for those that haven't seen it yet.

What makes blocks valuable: (A) Quality: What the TXs we can pack into the block are worth. (B) Capacity: How many we can pack into the block. These depend on many factors, but there are two universal principles: (1) Maximize choice. (2) Minimize variance. Free-form explanation: Quality- Improves when the block can be selected from more transactions, and when the typical transaction is worth more. Transaction worth is roughly determined by how predictable inclusion is ("risk"), and how valuable inclusion is ("reward"). By minimizing unpredictable risks like builder discretion or delivery failures, traders are exposed to less variance and can bid more. The value of inclusion is largely down to how popular the chain is, which can be improved by a better tx pipeline. I'm bullish on multi-party block construction, because it allows multiple builders to contribute (choice), reducing risks through additional inclusion paths (variance). Capacity- Improves when blocks can be propagated fast and with low variance. It depends on how efficiently the transaction pipeline interacts, and how large the network distance between nodes is. There's some low-hanging fruit, such as: - Block propagation can be improved by adding nodes (choice of paths) - Bid provision could use a warm connection (variance) - The auction could be held closer to the proposer (variance) Because improving capacity is beneficial for the network, this is a natural place for the transaction pipeline to cooperate. This already happens, via public goods such as sidecars. One example of cooperation is joint payload propagation, an outcome of the last blockspace forum. TL;DR Add choice, reduce variance.
