Nicole Hannah Jones' essay in The New York Times Magazine ("In Fighting for Every Black Child, Did I Betray My Own") should cause all sides along the political spectrum to reflect on public education in America. It took courage for Ms. Jones to publicly question her own views on education. She determined that her daughter's education and well-being were more important than her long-standing beliefs. The traditional wisdom is that children in northern states receive a better public school education than those in the southern states. Based on test results in Mississippi and Arkansas, that is no longer true. In states like Massachusetts, the answer has been to end objective testing in our schools. We should consider what these southern states are doing differently. One thing we will find is that in Massachusetts and Connecticut, the curriculum is focused on indoctrinating children with "preferred" political beliefs, rather than teaching them to "add and subtract" and "read and write." Rather than doing away with objective testing we need to return teaching our children objectively.
