Always proud to play for the press team, but especially yesterday! Bad News Babes 22, Congress 16 in an energetic high-scoring @CWSoftballGame that raised more than $800,000 for the @YSCBuzz. (Believe it or not, I hit several RBIs, made an out at home and was named Press MVP.)

While a federal judge has ordered the White House to immediately restore press credentials for CNN, MSNOW, and Politico, it’s unclear if TV networks will resume pool coverage of Trump. The WH has not said whether CNN is back in the pool—a separate issue from the credentials.

Yes, WHCA has long provided specific guidance from Secret Service and various administrations on matters where video material should not be used at all or with limitations for security reasons.

The print and radio pool also distribute their information to other outlets. Stills use their respective wire services to distribute images. WH has invited secondary and new media outlets into pool that do not have any responsibility to provide content beyond their own viewers/readers. Those outlets do not provide a collective product.

Today’s action revoking access for journalists from CNN, POLITICO, and MSNOW violates the First Amendment. The implications extend beyond these organizations: a standard used to exclude one news outlet because of its coverage could be applied to any outlet in the future. The American people, through a free and independent press, must be able to scrutinize those elected to power, regardless of whether government officials view it favorably.  That’s why courts have repeatedly held that once the White House provides access to journalists, it cannot deny that access arbitrarily or based on the content of their reporting. The president said it plainly in the Oval Office, describing his own planned action as a “ban on the free press.” The Constitution protects the freedom of the press from government interference. That protection does not depend on whether the president likes a news organization’s coverage, agrees with its reporting, or approves of the questions its journalists ask. It is about the right of the American people to receive a full and independent account of the activities, policies and decisions of whoever occupies the nation’s highest office.
