Seeing so many "pro-growth" commentators deliberately misinterpret Andy Burnham's statements on growth, or perhaps just be so incurious and bad at their jobs, is a nice reminder that it is in a very poor expert cohort that Britain finds much of its growth challenges.

In addition to maintaining good hub feeder networks that bypass Heathrow that most of the UK enjoys, we should try to unpick this and support the creation of a substantial point to point network from Manchester. Heathrow expansion does, unavoidably, make that harder to do.

I don't think it's healthy for the UK for MPs in North England to vote in what should be a biased way on this. North English MPs should not, for example, be allowed to block Heathrow if that's what London wants. Nor should they be allowed to force Heathrow expansion through.

The history of UK central government management of the UK's airports has been damaging to most of the country outside of South East England. Deliberate centralisation of services on London up to the late 80s, and then far higher public investment in airport connectivity since.

I share the four photos I took from my recent visit to Leeds Bradford Airport. I am not one to talk down Leeds. But I remain of the opinion that connecting Leeds, Liverpool, and Sheffield to Manchester Airport as a proper Northern Hub would be preferable.

Jet2, which is Yorkshire's Airline, is in fact excellent. And operates from many more operates than just Leeds. Plus has the best/worst jingle going.

But there are just so many more people who want to go to Spain on holidays from Yorkshire than there are in the North East. So they end up with similar passenger numbers. I think the big remaining advantages of NCL is the Emirates flight to Dubai and Air France to Paris.
