The reaction to Dario Saves The World - which follows the Summer of Rogue AI show which has been followed (as many of us predicted it would) by a naked a bid for power - has been really interesting, as reaction falls into two clear camps. In one camp: people who have had skin in the game in a market, and know all the tricks someone uses to acquire power. Along with experienced technical and engineering people. People who can see through a stunt that uses technical language to dazzle us. They’ve seen right through it. And in the other camp: basically people who don’t know anyone in (1) and derive their knowledge from Dario’s networks, conveyed uncritically by the media. There are lot of good people in this camp, but they don’t have the experience to assess a claim that AI just acquired agency, or new powers, and are genuinely alarmed. Dario now completely those owns media and policy worlds. The media are obliged to report his claims at face value (and Effective Altruists are compulsive and shameless liars). But he’s lost everyone else.
