Ahead of BC’s October 24 provincial election, B’nai Brith Canada has written to party leaders and sent them our election questionnaire, calling for concrete action to combat antisemitism and protect Jewish British Columbians.
Canada is in the midst of a crisis of antisemitism. Our 2025 Annual Audit of Antisemitic Incidents in Canada documented 847 incidents in BC and 6,800 nationwide. In BC, that is a 250% increase compared to 242 incidents in 2022.
We have asked parties how, if given the opportunity to form government, they will:
1) Protect Jewish communities in BC, including by increasing security funding, establishing a dedicated hate-crime prosecution unit, and exploring armed security provided by trained and licensed professionals at vulnerable institutions;
2) Combat antisemitism in schools and post-secondary institutions, ensuring Jewish students can learn safely and that concerns about harassment, intimidation, and exclusion are addressed; and
3) Formally adopt and implement the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance ("IHRA") working definition of antisemitism across provincial policies and programs, including through student education and mandatory antisemitism training for public servants.
The responses we receive will be published on our social media platforms so voters can see where parties stand on these crucial issues for our communities.
