The thing about 24 that bothers me most is… Who is this for? It’s not because TV was begging for it. ESPN had to be convinced. It’s not for a boatload of new cash. Losing conf champ games is gonna make this a minimal gain. It’s not because the 22nd team has any shot at a natty. It doesn’t. It’s certainly not done with the health, safety, or academic success of the players in mind since they don’t even get a say in this. It’s entirely to appease the people donating the money that keeps a financially irresponsible business model afloat. It’s discounting success so schools can say “look what your donation bought.” It’s an industry hellbent on treating investors and bosses as the customer, and customers as an infinite resource that will keep coming back no matter what.

It's because TV executives want a longer season of their hit tv show on ESPN, and now they will have several more weeks of it. Now they can sell even more pharmaceutical, gambling, and streaming ads. It's no more complicated than that. They don't care about the sport we love.

Me, thinking that "24" refers to the tv show. "Who is this for?" me: I liked it. "It’s not because TV was begging for it." me: I'm pretty sure it was popular. "ESPN had to be convinced." me: ...wait. What're you talking about ...? Oh.

When I started reading your tweet, I thought someone had convinced ESPN to reboot the Kiefer Sutherland show '24.' Thats crazy! Is Jack Bauer battling Stephen A. Smith? And yet, somehow...that still makes more sense than college football teams in a 24 team playoff.

This is an excellent take and I would add that they don’t know their customers. They are alienating the people who have followed the sport for decades, and they will be left with the generations that have grown up with infinite more options, and don’t go to games.

Football is not basketball, baseball, soccer. Too many games in a season. While we pay kids now, we are still shortening their careers, and further separating them from the academic part. Too far for me.

This is being done solely because ESPN and the rest of the sports commentary class believe they can generate more clicks and views discussing a playoff game than they can the Music City Bowl—even if it’s the same teams playing and the same fans watching.

This is to add juice for the gambling industry… period. This is not for the benefit of the schools, the players or any conference.

Sankey got his strength of conference metric, and he has the ultimate broadcast partner in ESPN. You can expect the “rate of SEC” in CFB to continue to dramatically expand with this move. It was already anti-competitive garbage. Now it’s even more so. I am at a loss as to why the non-P2 continues to accept ever decreasing legitimacy. I guess it’s because people assume conference bureaucrats like the ACC’s Phillips care about protecting the competitive integrity of the sport, when in fact as long as the money is sufficient they are happy for their members to be stooges in the P2 play.

ESPN had to be convinced because they’re giving up the CCGs. The conference championship games are the key. People were going to realize soon that they have become a meaningless waste of a very valuable week. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Truly being a national champion means nothing anymore. Making the CFP alone is a national championship just like making March Madness or the Final Four is all that matters in college hoops.

It is going to turn into a Premier League like system. Bottom three teams get kicked out and have to play in the ACC.
