The session, “Partial & General Equilibrium Models, IO, SAM & GTAP,” explored key approaches to economic modelling & their application to policy analysis.

CSEP Fellow @PrernaPrabhaka3 participated in the seminar “Navigating the New World Order: Liberal Grand Strategy in the Age of Geopolitics,” organised by the @FNFreiheit in Nairobi, Kenya, from 14–18 September. The programme explored the changing global order, geopolitics, geoeconomics & their implications for international cooperation & economic policy. The cohort also visited the United Nations Office at Nairobi, meeting @ZainabHawa, Director-General, UNON & learning about the UN’s work in Nairobi.

CSE kicked off its National Roundtable-cum-Capacity Building Workshop yesterday, September 23, at AAETI, Nimli, Rajasthan. The inaugural session, comprising @ArunGoyal59 (CERC), KVS Baba, @DrTongia, @pradeep_cpant and @rajeevkchauhan, highlighted the challenges arising from greater renewable energy capacity. A consensus prevailed across the panel that the conversation has to move beyond capacity to generation without compromising grid stability. The solutions for this include thermal flexibility and the installation of battery and pumped storage in the capacity mix. A bottom-up initiative at the state level for planning was considered the next step needed for grid build-out. A robust cost assessment of the transmission network and the creation of advance capacity are necessary to maintain the momentum of renewable energy build-out. The post-lunch session included the capacity-building component, with presentations from Rohit Vijay, Ph.D. (@CSEP_Org) on Firming RE; Dr. Zakir Hussain Rather (Grid Integration Lab, @iitbombay) on technological challenges of RE integration; Mayuri Singh(Comm'fident) on the importance of communication in times of rapid policy changes; and Rajan Varshney (@ntpclimited) on solar thermal technology use cases. The Theme 1 discussion, moderated by @MatthamRamesh (@businessline) and joined by Saumendra Aggrawal (@PrayasEnergy), Manish K.(@climatepolicy), and Rohit Vijay, Ph.D., covered the challenges of scaling grid integration and the way ahead in policy to achieve it. The discussion centred on the commendable job grid operators have done despite power sources providing limited flexibility support. The pathway ahead is creating supporting mechanisms to translate capacity into generation. The discussions will continue over the next two days at the roundtable.

Aparna Preethan & @badrinarayanang use CGE modelling to examine the economy-wide implications of reducing tariff protection for India’s steel industry. The analysis finds that a 90% tariff reduction could lead to: • US$237m increase in GDP • US$612.5m increase in aggregate exports • ~1% decline in domestic steel output • Gains for downstream sectors including machinery, automobiles and electronics The paper also models a phased 50% tariff reduction over five years, with steel output remaining resilient as the industry continues to grow. The analysis covers tariffs only; non-tariff measures are not quantified.
