#FarmerFriday: Campaign Trail Edition One of the greatest parts of this campaign has been the people I’ve met along the way. From farm fields to tailgates, I’ve traveled across South Carolina, shaken a lot of hands, heard a lot of stories, and spent time with the people who make these communities so special. And I’ve learned that no matter the crowd, even in the middle of a parade, you’re sure to find a farmer in South Carolina. 🌾 As a farmer myself, those conversations mean something to me. Agriculture isn’t just something I talk about on the campaign trail, it’s the life I know, the people I understand, and a heritage I’m proud to be a part of. To everyone who has welcomed me to your farms, businesses, communities, tailgates, and hometowns, thank you. Thank you for sharing your stories, your concerns, and what matters most to your families. For this week’s #FarmerFriday, we want to highlight Scott Biering and the WILD time we had at Bee City Zoo learning about AGRITOURISM, their honey production, and the role the South Carolina Department of Agriculture can play in supporting businesses that bring agriculture, education, and tourism together. Farming comes in all different shapes and sizes in South Carolina, and it’s important that YOUR Department of Agriculture recognizes that. Operations like Bee City show us how agriculture can create new opportunities, educate the next generation, and bring people to knowing where their food comes from. Of course, we had to get the full experience too, feeding the giraffes and getting up close with the monkeys and kangaroos! 🦒🐒🦘 Agritourism gives South Carolinians a chance to experience agriculture firsthand while creating another market for our farmers, producers, and rural businesses. That’s something we should be working to GROW across the State! #FBF to the summer of 2008 when Commissioner of Agriculture Les Tindal saw to it that I attended the South Carolina Commissioner’s School for Agriculture! I’m proud to carry on the legacies of so many who have gone before us by investing in the next generation of agricultural leaders. I fully plan to support our youth programs like 4-H, FFA, the SC Farm Bureau Youth Conference, Conservation Districts’ Envirothon, Commissioner’s School for Agriculture, the SC Governor’s School for Agriculture, Ag in the Classroom, and many others across our state. Through a collaborative approach with State Superintendent @ellenfored , we will work to bring more local food into our schools, build a strong statewide Farm to School program, and partner with local schools to bring agriculture back into every school district across South Carolina. The future of South Carolina agriculture is in our hands. It all starts with investing in the next generation! 🌱🚜🇺🇸

Getting an up-close look at their operation and talking about what it takes to keep family farms growing and thriving right here in South Carolina was a great reminder of just how important it is that we preserve these opportunities for the next generation and protect South Carolina’s sacred rural heritage. Thank you to Marvin & Jada for opening up your family’s farm, showing me around, and sharing your story! South Carolina agriculture is STRONG because of families like these! Yesterday, we had the pleasure to visit the Colleton Commercial Kitchen, where we ran into some leaders from the community and saw firsthand how this facility is doing exactly what we need MORE of across our state: giving small businesses and local producers the space and resources they need to GROW, while connecting local food in their on site farmers market & cafe. That’s how we build stronger LOCAL markets and keep more South Carolina dollars right here at home! 🌾🍽️ Even better, we learned about the work being done to connect local production with their free school lunch program and had a chance to look around the Colleton County Museum! Places like the Colleton Commercial Kitchen truly embody what this campaign is about: connecting our farmers with consumers, allowing them an opportunity to connect and grow, and helping feed their children, while also reminding us of our agricultural history through the local museum. No matter where you go in South Carolina, no one is a stranger. Thank you to Myles and Lauren Murdaugh for taking the time to explain the serious issues facing our logging families across our state. With high fuel prices, outrageous insurance premiums, and a major decline in the forestry industry, our logging families desperately need new markets and support. Their family company alone is now spending nearly $750 a day on fuel. I’m honored that Lauren stopped me at the local gas station and felt compelled to have an honest conversation about the future of our beloved state. That’s the South Carolina way. Our rural communities are hurting, and we need relief soon. Support your local loggers! 🪵🌲🇺🇸

South Carolina small businesses are paying roughly 52 cents per gallon in state and federal taxes on diesel fuel alone while prices are now well over $6.00 a gallon. Our farmers, foresters/loggers, truckers, and small businesses need relief at the pump, and we need it NOW! Call your members of the General Assembly and Congress and urge them to suspend the state and federal gas and diesel taxes!

Welles Crowther will never be forgotten! He saved hundreds because of his heroism that led to his ultimate sacrifice! There’s something special about a farmer who works hard to keep a piece of our agricultural history alive. For this #FarmerFriday, we’re proud to feature an icon of the Lowcountry, Marion “Rollen” Chalmers. This native of the Levy Community has spent years perfecting the art of growing heritage grains like Carolina Gold and Charleston Gold Rice. His work has taken him across the Lowcountry, including Daufuskie Island, where he helped bring rice production back for the first time in more than 100 years. Today, Rollen and his wife, Frances, share that passion through Rollen’s RAW Grains in the Levy Community of Hardeeville, offering their heritage grains along with fresh produce and other local products. The Chalmers’ story is a great example of what South Carolina agriculture is all about, hard work, patience, perseverance, and a deep passion for the land and the history behind it.🌾🌙🌴 #FarmerFriday #Lowcountry #Heritage #FarmersFirst
