This conversation with @ihate1999, @marcelorraine, @carelvwyk, @AfribitKibera and @princejoj0 reminds me of why we shouldn't discourage anyone's work. Bitcoin in Africa keeps gaining momentum because of every single African Bitcoiner's contribution to the ecosystem.

This year, I was brought onboard as the above mentioned role. The Head of tech, @EMbits and I headed out to Kigali to coordinate the @FreeRoutingAf Bootcamp. We had a furnished tutor @dzeg5 who handled hands-on sessions and ensured the participants all learnt well from Day 1.

Our Lightning Developer Bootcamp in Kigali officially came to an end yesterday 🇷🇼⚡ Five days of learning, building, contributing, and getting hands on with Bitcoin and Lightning came to an end yesterday. The final day was hackathon day. After four days of learning the fundamentals, working with Bitcoin Core, contributing to open source, building on Lightning, and exploring real world use cases, participants had the opportunity to put everything together and build. From ideas to working prototypes, it was amazing to see the creativity, technical skills, and energy in the room. More importantly, participants walked away with not just knowledge, but the confidence to keep building and contributing to the Bitcoin ecosystem. A huge thank you to every participant who showed up, asked questions, wrote code, broke things, fixed them, and kept learning throughout the week. 🙌 A special shoutout to our instructor, @dzeg5 , for taking the participants through an incredible five days of technical learning and hands on sessions. Your dedication made a huge difference. Yesterday, we officially wrapped up the Addis Ababa Lightning Developer Bootcamp with our Hackathon and Demo Day. 🇪🇹⚡ Participants presented the projects they had been working on throughout the week, showcasing not only what they learned but also their ability to apply Bitcoin and Lightning concepts to real world applications. Over five days, participants explored Bitcoin fundamentals, ran Bitcoin nodes, created and signed transactions, contributed to open source, and built applications powered by the Lightning Network. Watching their growth from Day 1 to Demo Day was truly rewarding. A special thank you to our lead instructor, @Extheo , for his dedication, patience, and commitment to delivering a highly practical learning experience throughout the bootcamp. Thank you to @kelvinator05 , Engineering Lead at @btrustteam , for leading the open source sessions and helping participants make their first contributions to Bitcoin open source projects. We are also incredibly grateful to @KalKassa and his team for the countless hours of work that went into making this bootcamp a reality. I have spent the last few years helping developers learn Bitcoin and Lightning through bootcamps across Africa with @FreeRoutingAf. One thing kept standing out. Many developers want to contribute to open source, but don’t know where to start. The gap isn’t talent. It’s finding the right project, understanding the codebase, making that first contribution, and staying consistent. So I started building Pull. Pull helps developers become open source builders through structured roadmaps, real projects, contribution tracking, project submissions, peer reviews, and a public builder profile. It started as a @btcplusplus Nairobi hackathon project that we didn’t finish in time. But the idea stuck. She began her career as a civil engineer, explored technology on the side, and followed her curiosity into a completely new world. Day 5. Final Day of the Lightning Developer Bootcamp in Kampala ⚡️🇺🇬 We wrapped things up the best way possible. By building. The final day was dedicated to a mini hackathon, with 7 groups working on different ideas built on top of everything they had learned over the past few days. You could feel the shift immediately. Each group presented what they built, how they approached the problem, and the challenges they faced along the way. It wasn’t just about the final product, it was about the thinking behind it. One moment that stood out. A solo female developer went head to head with full teams and came out second, just a few points behind the winner. That tells you everything you need to know about the level of talent in the room. In the end, sats were awarded to both the winning team and the runner up, a small but meaningful reward for the work put in over the week. Shout out to @GorillaSats and @BitDevsKLA for contributing to the sats prize. But beyond the prizes, the real win was clear. Developers who came in curious are leaving as builders. Thanks to @BrindonMwiine and team, the bootcamp also led to the creation of the first Bitcoin Club at Makerere University, Kampala. That’s a huge win. Huge thanks to our instructor, @dzeg5, for leading from the front and making sure no one was left behind. Shout out to the team, @EMbits, @megasley, @BrindonMwiine, @afansabila, and @NowarugabaG for putting everything together and making this bootcamp a success.
