Leading a high-level Ethiopian government delegation in New York, President Taye Atske-Selassie called for a global shift from renewable-energy generation to delivery, stressing the need for investment in grids, connectivity and productive uses to turn energy potential into electricity access, industrialization and jobs. Adonia Ayebare, Foreign Minister of the Republic of #Uganda, who conveyed a message of goodwill from H.E. President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni & commended the Chairperson for his leadership of the AU Commission. The Chairperson congratulated Amb. Ayebare on his appointment, noting that his extensive diplomatic experience, including his previous engagement with the AU and service as Uganda’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, would contribute to advancing Uganda’s interests & strengthening effective multilateralism. UGANDA CALLS FOR STRONGER REGIONAL ACTION AS HORN OF AFRICA FACES OVERLAPPING CRISES Uganda has called for stronger regional cooperation, conflict prevention and economic integration as the Horn of Africa faces interconnected political, security, humanitarian and climate-related challenges. Speaking at the 74th Extraordinary Session of the IGAD Council of Ministers in Djibouti, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs in charge of Regional Affairs, @HonKyeyune said the region requires collective solutions to challenges that increasingly transcend national borders, including conflict, political instability, displacement and climate shocks. He urged IGAD Member States to prioritise conflict prevention, inclusive governance, climate resilience, economic integration and stronger institutional coordination. @HonKyeyune also called for strengthened early-warning mechanisms, free movement of people, capital, goods and services, expanded regional trade corridors and action on the root causes of displacement, while urging Member States to assess the wider implications of the conflict in the Middle East and its potential spillover effects on the Horn of Africa. Uganda further called for predictable financing, transparency and accountability in IGAD resource management, equitable geographical representation in the organisation’s senior and technical structures, and stronger oversight of the Regional Migration Fund. Reaffirming Uganda’s commitment to regional peace and security, Hon. Kasolo highlighted Uganda’s longstanding contribution to peace operations in Somalia, South Sudan and Sudan, and stressed the importance of regular Ordinary Sessions of the IGAD Council of Ministers to strengthen oversight and sustained regional engagement.

Otengo made the call at a vital briefing by ECA Executive Secretary Dr. Claver Gatete, for Ambassadors and Permanent Representatives, convened at the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) on 18 September 2026 in Addis Ababa, to discuss pressing continental development issues and ECA’s continued support for African Member States., The briefing aimed to enhance ongoing dialogue between ECA and the diplomatic community, providing updates on priority economic and development matters and offering a platform for Member States to raise concerns that require ECA’s policy, technical, and analytical assistance. The session featured presentations by ECA officials followed by an interactive exchange with Ambassadors and Permanent Representatives. Discussions focused on several critical topics, including financing for development, progress on the Sevilla commitments, domestic resource mobilization, Africa’s debt challenges, the proposed Borrowers’ Club, and ECA’s role in advancing economic transformation and sustainable development across the continent.
