Nothing has prepared me for the scale of antisemitism Hamas starting this war has unleashed. It takes my breath away. Still finding my bearings in a world irreparably changed, but the one thing is certain. I stand with my Jewish friends even more firmly now.

Yes it was not so much the atrocity as the reaction to the atrocity that made me finally realise the left as I understood it no longer existed, if it ever existed in the first place.
Three years ago, on 7 October, my worldview changed—not so much because of the atrocities committed by Hamas (what else would you expect from a genocidal terrorist group?), but because of the shocking response to those atrocities from many of my “progressive” friends: from apologetics and denial to outright jubilation. That day, I was jolted out of my complacency and woke up to the poisonous ideology that had quietly taken hold across large swathes of the Left and academia. My forthcoming book, The Betrayal of the Enlightenment (@PitchstoneBooks), reconstructs how self-proclaimed progressives, of all people, could have arrived at this point.

There are no words that can truly capture how the world has changed for Jewish people since October 7th. And there is nothing I can say today that hasn't already been said, more powerfully, by others. So I'll just share one of the many moments from that day, and the days that followed, that I will never forget. On the morning of October 7th, I was in synagogue when the news began to reach us. My brother lives in Israel - and we knew he was in the Gaza Envelope in the south, celebrating the Jewish festival of Simchat Torah with friends from the area. But even as the news came in of what was happening there, it never crossed our minds that he might be in danger. A few hours later, when we had returned home from synagogue, still hearing rumours of what was happening, a phone rang in our home. We are religious Jews. On Shabbat and festivals, we don't use our phones. But my great-grandmother, Lily, a survivor of Auschwitz, was unwell, and the hospital had asked my mother to keep hers switched on. My brother knew that. He was calling under instruction from the community's rabbi. He told us that terrorists had surrounded the area. Only a handful of local residents were armed, standing between the community and dozens of heavily armed terrorists. No one knew what would happen next, or whether Hamas would manage to break in and murder them. He was, in essence, calling to say goodbye. My sister took the phone and told him she was pregnant. None of us knew. She told him then because we didn't know if we would ever get the chance to speak to him again. Then the call ended. And we carried on with Shabbat and Simchat Torah, not knowing what would happen where my brother was. Knowing that some of his friends, who had gone outside the gates to see what was happening, had been shot at. Some of them were murdered. We didn't hear from him again until the next day. I have never shared this before. Because our story ended with another phone call, the next day. So many families' stories ended so differently. You will struggle to find a single Jewish person who doesn't have a friend, a friend of a friend, or a family member who was affected that day. Three years on, I think about that phone call often. About what it means to call your family knowing that, on the road outside, there are terrorists trying to get into your community to murder, rape, pillage and destroy as much as they possibly can. And about what these three years have meant for Jewish people and Israelis everywhere. We will never forget. We could not, even if we tried. The trauma of that day runs too deep, through almost every Jewish family around the world.

Remembered how Owen Jones’ response to viewing Hamas footage of their own atrocities was to suggest it wasn’t as bad as the public had been led to believe. Unaware of anyone else reacting to viewing the atrocities by attempting to pick holes in how much sadism it really showed.

"The Zionists are in power in Israel". Close to being my favorite ever comment on here.
Replying to @DAaronovitch
What is not very complicated is the situation today in Israel. The Zionists are in power in Israel and the Palestinians are being ethnically cleansed and has been subject to a genocide. You might not like it but Zionists are racists and terrorists since 1947.

This is the statement the @ucl Islamic Society put out on October 7. UCL has a radicalisation problem and it’s there in plain sight.

We all remember where we were as the news broke; how we felt as footage of those indescribable events emerged; the horror as things became clearer. Murder, sexual violence, kidnapping. We remember the victims and their families and honour them today and every day. 7/10/23 💙🤍

Statement by Foreign Minister, Gideon Sa'ar We established a clear principle: It is not possible to act against Israel without Israel taking appropriate measures in response. In this spirit, the measures I announced on 8 September have been implemented: 1.The removal of the British representatives from the International Gaza Support Center in Kiryat Gat. 2.The termination of British activity to train Palestinian Authority forces in Judea and Samaria. 3.The denial of entry to Israel of 12 British elected officials and other British citizens involved in antisemitic and anti-Israel activity, as well as those who deny our very right to exist. 4.The British Consulate in Jerusalem is ending its operations today. Accordingly, the sign of the British Consulate in Jerusalem has been removed. We did not want to reach this point, but the actions of the UK Labour Government brought us here. Their latest decision in this series was to initiate a range of far-reaching sanctions against the communities in Judea and Samaria, as well as additional sanctions on defence exports to Israel. All this was accompanied by hostile rhetoric, including false accusations against Israel, such as accusations of “ethnic cleansing.” This decision adds to a growing and escalating series of unilateral measures against Israel adopted by the Labour Government since taking office in July 2024. These measures included, among others, unilateral recognition of a virtual “Palestinian state” in September 2025; the renewal of funding to UNRWA; the suspension of licences for defence exports to Israel; the imposition of sanctions on Israeli ministers; the imposition of sanctions on Israeli individuals and entities; the suspension of negotiations on a free trade agreement; restrictions on Israel’s official participation in an international defence and security equipment exhibition in Britain; the freezing of military dialogue and security cooperation; the prevention of IDF officers from participating in training at the Royal College of Defence Studies; and repeated, biased and unilateral attacks against Israel in the international arena.

Great line in today's @DouglasKMurray Spectator column on the decline of reading: "During a 30-minute train journey in which someone might once have got through a chapter of a novel, today they've seen 100 videos of cats being attacked by a boa constrictor or Piers Morgan being attacked by a fact."
People like @piersmorgan who don't know (or pretend not to understand) the proven facts about the war in Gaza and the number of civilian deaths are always quick to claim Israel's actions are "massively disproportionate" and that they should show more "restraint". But they never answer this key question: What would be the PROPORTIONATE response by Israel to the savage invasion by Hamas on October 7 to murder, rape, torture and kidnap hundreds of Israeli civilians?

This poor woman is sobbing in distress as pro-Pals protest on October 7 in New York. They yell “Zionist” at her as she weeps. Nobody comes to comfort her. This is actually really upsetting.

THREE YEARS. Three years since the moment my life changed forever. Even now, it feels so unreal that sometimes I still can’t fully comprehend that I was kidnapped and taken to Gaza. Sometimes it feels like it was all just a nightmare I somehow woke up from. But at the same time, the pain is always here. It never really leaves, and sometimes, it only gets stronger. This year, when I went to visit the graves of my friends, I felt like it had somehow become even harder. Maybe because the hostages are finally home. Maybe because I’m no longer part of that fight. Or maybe because everyone else has already graduated, moved to Tel Aviv, and started their careers. And you remain there, like a memory from another life. A life that was innocent, young, and happy. A group of friends simply enjoying life, dreaming big, with no idea how quickly everything could change. I miss you every single day. With every step I take, on every path I choose, I find myself wondering what it would be like if you were still here beside me. As more time passes, I realize that soon, more time will have passed since we lost you than the amount of time I actually had the chance to know you. And that is something I still can’t accept. To me, you are always with me. And for those of us who have lost someone we love, it isn’t easy to watch the world keep moving when some people’s lives simply stopped. It isn’t easy to live with the guilt of being the ones who are still here. But we have to keep going, because that is what they would have wanted for us. We have to learn to live alongside the pain. Embrace it. Forgive it. Understand it. But at the same time, keep looking forward. Give yourself permission to LIVE.

Thank you for coming Bella. It means a lot to have our council leader recognise our pain and to feel it with us.
Today we remember the innocent victims who suffered trauma, terror, torture, kidnap & murder on 7/10/23 & their loved ones. In Palmeira Square in Hove tonight we bore witness to the lives lived & lost. A moving memorial, full of love, longing & hope for a better future 🕯️

Tonight in Brighton 250 people came out to mark three years on from the Hamas massacre. This was truly an epic show of togetherness and solidarity especially after the horrors last weekend with the Green Party motion in our city. What a special community 🕯️💙

Note the choice of word - and the pain in his voice when he says it - when he says we *must* recognise the increase in antisemitic attacks around the world. He gave himself away there: he didn’t want to recognise it but he had to. “Must we? I suppose we must.”

The loss of life on oct 7 and all the lives since, remains in our hearts and to be forever mourned. We must do everything in our power to protect humanity and remember each others value.

3 yrs ago, we were told with glee, Israel is finished. Israel lost zero land. Hezbollah’s leaders? Dead. Hamas’ leaders? Dead. Islamic Jihad’s leaders? Dead. Iran’s leaders? Dead. Gaza is bricks. Thousands dead. Was it worth it? Did Israel’s enemies learn a single thing?
