Then, in the same statement, she called on the government to adopt legislation targeting people who "misrepresent facts" about residential schools. Gazan has indeed been campaigning for legislation that would criminalize certain public statements that wilfully promote hatred against Indigenous people by denying, downplaying or misrepresenting residential-school facts. That takes some fucking nerve. The historical record documents compulsory attendance, coercion and the rare forcible removals. It also documents parental applications and other routes into the system. Reducing more than a century of different circumstances to "our children were kidnapped" is rhetoric, not careful historical description.
