Months before this incident involving a TVK woman functionary was widely reported in the media, she was already a known face within the TVK ecosystem. All she wanted at the time was an opportunity to meet her party leader. She tried every non-violent means available to get an audience with him. When all those efforts failed, she eventually blocked his car only to be pushed aside by the vehicle. The same party and leader who claim to be “protectors of women” are now politicizing a single word from a 30-minute extempore speech by a leader whose patience and dignity have been repeatedly ridiculed by TVK’s senior leaders and abusive online warriors. Women functionaries of opposition parties face far worse abuse and threats from these warriors every day. When countless complaints yield no meaningful action, the possibility that such behaviour is being encouraged cannot be brushed aside? Mrs. Sathyabama is merely being used as a pawn in this by-election. M.K. Stalin and Udhayanidhi Stalin regularly face the public and media giving their opponents ample opportunities to misrepresent their words. If TVK leaders did the same perhaps the public would get a clearer picture of their true colours.
