How does she not understand that STEM requires the ability to read? It’s rather difficult to do science, tech, engineering, and even math without being able to read.

Reading, writing and math are the most basic skills that students need to learn. Science, Technology and Engineering all build on knowing those three basic skills. As does Economics. Critical thinking and creative build on top of all of those earlier skills. Failure at the most basic skills rules out building the skills further down the list.

The reason a lot of them can’t read or write is because they’re visitors from a foreign country and don’t speak America’s language in the home. Remigration is the humane answer for all people involved.

If one accounts for demographics, American education is still top 10 globally so I reject the premise that it's STEM vs literature.

Actually, they undermined the humanities first. They are attacking STEM now. The leftist curriculum is illiteracy put to the service of racist, sexist Marxism. That's why the kids can't read or do math.

It's kinda crazy that people would think that STEM would take away people's ability to read because you need to read in STEM too, it's not like there isn't a crap ton of reading in there. Do they think it's just a science book full of pictures and nothing else?

"Why can't Johnny read?" By Jerry Clower. It's an old standup routine but it's true.

They can't read because teachers are only pushing a rainbow agenda.

People need to look into “Mississippi Miracle” and how they turned the state education around before trying to analyze why kids can’t read. Mississippi is one of the poorest states with the least amount of funding per student and now is ranked 16 in education in the US.

It's systematically lowered expectations white promoting and celebrating mediocrity while abandoning tried and true learning methods with unproven intellectualize garage targeting children too young to even reason at the level being taught the way it is today. Then just promoting children who should be held back.

Have you seen the common core math they’ve been teaching? It’s awful!

They suck at all of it, because they were never taught to think, only to react. Critical Theory based sightreading turned a generation and a half of people into smoothbrains.

No. It's because public school systems don't teach reading phonetics anymore.

The reason our children can’t read or write or do math or science is because our education system is run by the teachers unions and administrators who are political operatives for the democrat party

Progressive pedagogy and a fractured society will do it.

That isn't why they can't read or write. By the way, you need to learn both as well as math to go into stem. They can't do anything because teaching has become less important than indoctrination. Period full stop.

Foreigners who can't speak English also can't read or write English news at 11.

Government schools are run by people who work to prevent children from learning. It really is that simple.

Literacy really should come first. Time was, that was the function of the first three or four grades in what we called "grammar school." My word, what a suggestive term! 🤔

Most teachers are bad teachers and are not any good at actually teaching. Combine that with the fact that the education system is and has been completely captured by woke ideologues and that explains why it is so bad. Add to that, the effect entertainment and media has on kids...

True, but before the STEM emphasis existed, they at least tried to explain why literacy, both as an ability to read and write and engaging with literature, was important. Now they don’t even want Shakespeare in the curriculum.

If the kids could do STEM, immigrants like me would not find life so easy here. It’s almost laughable how little effort I put into becoming upper middle class. In China, I’d be struggling for scraps because the competition is fierce

Reading and writing are pre-school/kindergarten things. I would say basic math is in there as well. STEM has nothing to do with the basics! It's advanced learning that's the issue. They don't advance!

The ones who can’t read, write or do math don’t attend school regularly or don’t put forth effort or both. There are too many students succeeding to blame it on the system. Education/success is there waiting for them if they simply attend school and put forth effort.

I also don't see how we've been overemphasizing STEM. Did the number of college credit hours in the humanities that STEM majors are forced to get for their STEM degrees suddenly decrease while I wasn't looking?

It's 100% the new "teaching" methods. Don't sound out each part of a word you don't know and learn how to say it, just look at the first letter and guess what it could be based on context of the rest of the sentence (that's full of other words you guessed)!

to be honest, kids dont read anymore. I read a lot and notice my vocabulary and of those who read is far larger, same with reading comprehension. I feel like that falls on schools, parents and screen time. They would rather play roblox or fortnight than read.

It's not just overemphasizing l. They moved away from Phonics into some Critical junk I forgot that name was and they are teaching math incorrectly

The only subject being emphasized is crazy thinking. If you can’t read, you can’t comprehend science.

its lack of lateral thinking skills - a lot of parents are not teaching their kids to read and write. good students typically have good parents.

Yeah, teachers are teaching them how to read, write, maht and science. They are teaching them how to protest, riot, disobey parents and laws.

i am complete surprised at how poorly children read these days. I have been forced to ensure my children can read by making them read to me out loud. Its a complete Joke.
