two VCs went on @BFMradio and gave one of the best breakdowns I've heard of how venture actually works in SEA. worth the full hour if you're a student or builder.
my notes:
🇲🇾 Malaysia's crypto companies (per @jacobkxyz from @Superscrypt) that are hidden gems punching above their weight:
1 | @JupiterExchange: ~$400M annualised revenue last year
2 | @pendle_fi: ~$40M revenue, pioneered yield trading onchain
3 | @etherscan: ~$20M, THE default block explorer that branched off to @solscanofficial and more
4 | @coingecko: reportedly started with a $100 investment
all Malaysian founders or roots.
🎓 on breaking into VC: no finance degree or silver spoon needed. Jacob went from agritech at Temasek to crypto VC by moving money onchain during lockdown and posting his analysis on Twitter. his advice to students verbatim: don't come asking for a job. post your research publicly (basically build in public!). why does this protocol make money, why could it 10x, why could it go to zero. do that enough times and you've speedrun the actual job.
🚩 red flags they fund against: raising institutional money while running a side hustle, sending your EA to investor calls at seed stage ("you have to be the busiest, most connected person in the company"), chasing magazine features before revenue, and husband-wife co-founder teams unless the skill sets are exceptional / complementary.
📈 pretty interesting stats: $10M revenue in SEA used to take 7-8 years. by 2021 it was 4-6. now some companies do it in months. we are going through a hyper-acceleration of scaling, where the old rules of time and growth no longer apply.
building-in-public path is how a lot of our @SuperteamMY members got their start btw. worst case someone yells at you in the replies, which just sharpens your thesis 😉
